Do You Have Hoarding Tendencies

Ask a Question

Whist I am not as bad as this "Decades of hoarding made house 'a no-go area'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-essex-58361528

But I know that my spare room is full of boxes. I see deals think that will be good for so and so and buy it, but I have bought more gifts than I have people to give to 🙂

Whilst nothing was very expensive it does add up. So I am going to go cold turkey, in September and try not buy any more! I'm even wrapping up the gifts so that I visually know how much I have for everyone.

Am I the only one ?

No, but I do find that most modern homes have loads of stuff compared with a few decades ago.

I am the opposite and dispose of stuff only to find I could have used it later on!

Totally agree, most houses are so cluttered that I asked myself if I was seriously sick as my house is the total opposite.I donate all my children toys, books, clothes as soon they lose interest, or it doesn’t fit. if I don’t use a piece of clothing in one year that goes straight away.I beg my sisters and friends not to give me anything as I fear they will give me something horrendous and they will be offended if I get rid of it, but I love to give them presents but I always ask if they like it before I buy , so no surprises from me.I do have a small box for each child we’re I kept some memories that I believe they will like to see in future, but nothing major.

Meat and frozen meals in my freezer. This way there'd always food stored away in case there's an inflation in prices or a shortage.

Paper rolls? Not at the moment, but I plan on buying a batch.

When we lived in my old house, we had a utility room and I used to bulk buy every time something was on offer. Still have that tendency but have fight it as we now live in a 2 bed terrace with very little space, although I need to fight harder so that I can get into the spare room without moving boxes 😀

Ever since I started grilling meat (almost always it's meat on discount) and cook frozen food as if it were my own (let it unfreeze and cook it on a pan 'cause using a microwave leaves it tasteless, imo), I just don't see the point of going to restaurants unless I was on a trip.

Canned food is also a good idea, but people with very little space need to consider what's important to them.

I bet during lockdown this was very welcome and you weren't caught up in the craziness. Although it has added to my boarding tendencies as I find I have lots of soap and cleaning products in the house 🙂 PhilipMarc

If you ever buy a freezer, buy one that can be locked with a key or a bike lock.

Even though I live where it's very peaceful, I'm not letting my guard down by keeping doors open/unlocked or whatever.

Oh yeah, also have CCTV cameras so that's handy to see what comes and goes. Security and freedom is something that I cherish while my father has a huge ego and thinks it's fine to keep it all open (no wonder animals in his ranch have gone missing). If they [chickens and all] were mine, they'd be in a closed space so they wouldn't be some animal's meal.

We've caught ferrets and a genet (half ferret, half cat, basically).

(Not the actual genet that was caught.)

Cute animal, but it almost bit my finger off.

As for what happens after they're caught.. Sleep with the fishes.

I can be a bit of a hoarder. I often find myself hanging on to things "just in case" but I do try to have regular little clear outs to avoid things getting cluttered. I've recently started having a good sort through old clothes, now that the charity shops are open and taking donations again, and I'm hoping to clear out quite a bit and make some extra space.

No, my OCD won’t allow it.I guess it must be hard for those who do, well I know how hard is for me to live with OCD so I guess it must be hard for those suffering with hoarding.

I hope now lockdown is over you are able to get help with your OCD. I know from personal experience how incredibly hard it is to overcome compulsive behaviour as I know there is comfort in routine even if you know it's not good for you.

Take Care

I guess some of my actions could be construed as hoarding.

For Instance, I have about a dozen cans of the body spray I use in the cupboard, but I see this more as "stocking up"

I have similar tendancies, I have over 30 shower gels, shampoo etc. & have to stop myself buying the next bargain. My husband goes mad as we haven't got the space hence all the boxes in the spare room 😁

I am not a hoarder. When we have no use for something anymore I get rid. I do have clothes and shoes in the next size up for my son in the spare wardrobe but these are bought during the sales or bargains off fb, so are more forward planning for when he needs it and also money saving, but I wouldn't say it was hoarding.
