I've never come across this, probably because I shop out of town branches. I would prefer to give food and drink rather than money - I know that sounds judgemental but I don't feel comfortable giving cash. Sadly, there will always be a few that aren't genuine but if I choose to give food then I have no reason to be unhappy with my decision.
I can only see the homeless problem getting worse to be honest at least in the short term. I went to Bath the other day and there were quite a few about and it was constantly raining, a horrible existence trying to keep warm and safe in circumstances like that. I tend not to give money to the homeless my main charitable contribution is giving items to charity shops to sell rather than donating money, saves me the hassle of selling the items and occasionally when I drop off items I buy items from the shop.
The other day there was a senior guy and I went and purchased a sandwich and a water bottle for him. Don't see the point of giving money.
Drug addicts are who are homeless and obsessed with getting money to get high. I know one who always tries to ask me for money so I avoid going there, anyway.
Least he doing something for some cash, cant say the same for half of unemployed. I can see where some people are coming from though when it comes to homeless. I would rather buy them food and drink instead of giving money.
There are initiatives suggesting not to give money direct as it makes things worse. Many are offered shelter - but most of the ones you see on the streets, at least in my area, have declined that - they make too much money on the streets and have no intention of giving that up.
I don't give them anything most of them have homes to go to have full benifits on Wales on line today upto 50 a day are doing 200 mile trips into Cardiff for money
Yep, fake begging is a thing and I remember seeing a few years ago that some Gypsies, I think, on the metro would leave tissue packs. You'd have to give them like 50p or £1 so everyone realized it and didn't touch.
Rockman Hi, this reminded me of being in Costa coffee and a person came in asking if she could change up some £1's and the staff explained that they could only take £40 worth! I have been on trains also when they put tissues on the seats.
Yikes. That creeps me that the tissues thing is still going.
God knows if they're into actually robbing, kidnapping and trafficking. I guess it's a possibility of their leader does it. Dani1
Homelessness is a very complex issue. I have a relative who often used to buy hot drinks & food for homeless folk in town. When I inquired about this she said: "because if it were one of mine I'd hope someone would do the same" that's always stuck with me! It's worth remembering theres many many reasons people end up homeless, it's not always drug/alcohol related... but the advice is always not to give money but food etc is fine.
We have career beggars in our area, some with fairly high demands as they want at least a fiver from each person, not the spare change that most ask for
Sanitation1234 lol it’s perhaps their standard of living. I’ve seen beggars wearing north face and other higher end brands. You’d think they’d at least look the part...
Where I live there are homeless shelters and programs that homeless people can join to get them back into work and get paid for joining them but a lot don’t want to do it. there’s two major charity/ companies that take them in and help them give them work and shelter and food but they wont go. A lot also get benefits as well. So if people aren’t willing to help themselves then what else can you do?
unless directly asked for food I now give nothing to those on the streets too many career beggars and I use to buy food - a meal etc and hand those out until I saw two homeless chucking it in the bin because they wanted cash only. I now donate my time, clothes, items to food banks and animal shelters.
I've heard that giving money to food banks is the best thing to do. That way, they can focus on buying what's needed most and make sure things go to the people that need it the most.
