Honest Opinions about the 'Clap for NHS'.

In the News

Personally, I'm torn between it. On one hand, I can see that people want to do it to show their support for the NHS and that's fair enough. What bugs me about it, however, it feels like other front-line workers such as supermarket staff, bin men, teachers, people that work in care homes for the young and old aren't getting enough recognition in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I think the NHS are doing an amazing job.

I tend to agree with your point. I work in the justice sector and Prison Officers have died and face daily challenges on a fraction of the wage of nurses, not to mention at risk of violence and issues managing a prison population in lockdown - you don't see this reported.

Care staff, non NHS based are on minimum wage, people such as domiciliary carers visiting people in their homes which do such a lot of valuable work which I have seen and experienced first hand working in this environment for over 5 years. It always frustrated me the pittance of a wage received in this sector for such hard work.

It's not doing any harm but it isn't increasing the supplies of PPE either. I clapped directly at an ambulance passing me the other day (not blue lighting by the way) and he waved so I think they do appreciate our appreciation!

You are absolutely right, why clap for some and not others who are keeping us going. They are all on the 'front line'.

We don't do it anyway (we hate being told to do something) although we have heard others in the village on a Thursday night. I don't think it helps them either, it doesn't make them feel safe, rested or put food on their tables. 🐞

I think it’s a load of nonsense because 95% of e people doing it will take the P out of the NHS as soon as we are back to normal. Sadly, there won’t be any long term appreciation of the NHS, it’s a short term phenomena. Sad

zmt89 What is interesting is that A&E admissions are down 50% atm, so it definitely shows that people normally take the P.

TheChimp A lot go to A&E because they are to lazy/don't want to wait for a Doctors appointment or have no basic first aid and don't know how to apply a plaster.

Like anything that is over used it becomes meaningless. Bit like everyone saying 'luv you' at the end of a phonecall. Most only say it in response to the first one and even if you love that person it doesn't sound sincere. I love you is far more meaningful when said at times of emotion and loving times.I

Most now are clapping because they feel guilty if they don't. Thanks would be far more sincere/meaningful if they took the form of a donation, or of sweets, or a personal but socially distant conversation with a front line worker telling them from the heart how much you appreciate them.

I no longer clap as I feel a wally standing alone outside my house amongst people I mostly don't know, but I do know how much I appreciate everyone being brave and selfless during this pandemic.

Agree. I think I'd prefer to clap for all front line workers. My issue with clapping is people like my next door neighbours are doing it then they go out and ignore all the rules or have people around for parties.

I was about to say very similar I have next door neighbours who totally ignore social distancing, have family (not same household) visiting at all times, I saw several children (who don't live there) playing in the back garden. Then on Thursday nights they're out acting like demented seals, but not if the weather isn't too good.

I feel that the only reason why people are doing it is so that they could fit in with the rest of the crowd. Clapping is trendy at the moment and they like to keep up with the latest trends. But instead of this silly clapping, how about let's donate instead as well as give NHS workers a pay rise?

I think it’s stupid, i look outside when people are clapping and there all filming themselves doing it!! Like they need the recognition for clapping!!

Just put a nice thank you to all the key workers in the window so they can see it when they go past.

I think it's silly. I know a lot of NHS workers think the same. I get the idea for a one off, but it's every week lol.

I haven't clapped since the first week it happened. I feel it's a bit hollow and silly now. Especially with pots and pans, fireworks and people doing it for the Facebook and Twitter likes.
