Any Ideas on Books to Read during Lockdown?
Ask a Question
Wales have been in lockdown for a while already and I'm started to get bored so does anyone have any idea of any good books to read?
First Steps to Wealth by Dani Johnson. The main idea is that wealth depends on how much we save and has nothing to do with how much we earn. This book was a real eye-opener for me.
Brilliant thank you. I actually bought The Millionaire Next Door over Christmas which is very similar. Thanks for this
I read Chris Evan's - Memoirs of a Fruitcake, great insight, very funny and dark in places
There are lots of free or 99p books on Amazon for Kindle if you have a suitable device (I use my iPad). If free it doesnโt matter if you donโt enjoy it!
That's where I've found loads of great new authors ... as you say ... no risk if not a good one as it's free!
I can recommend The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. At 650 pages it needs time on your hands to read! I wondered what the hype about it was and now I understand. I think it has also been made into a film.
Thank you. I'll pop this on my list. I think I've actually heard of this one so may well give it a try
Anything by Wilbur Smith, although personally not into the ones that are set in more modern times. If you start at Birds of Prey there are about 6 that follow the adventures of the Courtney family and are a real rollercoaster of tragedy, turmoil, treachery, torture and terror!
This sounds really interesting. I'll have a look into this. Thank you for your suggestions
I love crime /murder mystery books. My favourite author is minette walters. She has written so many good books if you love crime you should definitely give her a go
Nic2020 they can be quite gruesome detail. But I do get gripped by her storylines
jamiepownall I may get be that a go then. I'm not usually into that sort of thing but I fancy trying something new tbh.
Try the chimp paradox. Itโs a self help book looking at reflection of your attitudes and feelings
That's really interesting. I'll definitely have a look at this. I love this sort of thing. Thank you.
If you're into horror, then I'd suggest Stephen King. I've been re-reading some of his books recently and really enjoying that.
jamiepownall My favourite is Misery, but he has so many good ones. Some I haven't read for years so I've been having fun reading them again.
I'm.not usually a horror book person but I do fancy reading something by Stephen King. Thanks for the suggestion
Whenever Iโm bored of my usual books, I prefer to read short stories. My favourite is Stephen Kingโs 4 Past Midnight. Itโs made up of 4 stories that can take days each to finish.
I am currently reading a book called "Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson. Apparently it helps you to understand those who cannot be understood. Have not finished it yet but thought it may help with some of those annoying people we all encounter at some stage in our lives.
Bernard Cornwell. His books are fantastic and there are different series to choose from which have lots of titles in them.
Ooh thank you. I'll have a look into him. Never heard of him before. Thanks very much for the suggestion
Nic2020 Historical warfare novels , you probably remember Sharpe (TV series about the Napoleonic wars ) about 20 books , The Last Kingdom series ( Viking era )13 books . About 30 other books including Waterloo , Azincourt and 3 or 4 mini series of 3 to 4 books .
Think I've read most of his (he's still writing ) 50 odd in total and counting . An excellent writer who follows the actual historical events quite closely with a fair bit of literary licence .
If you like one you will like them all . Another Author I like is Simon Scarrow , again historical fiction (Roman legions era ) about 20 books and counting .
Or on a different tack the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child (more a detective series ) 25 books so far . Weirdly Tom Cruise played the 6ft 7" hero in the film !
Although you can read any of the novels individually I prefer buying the books in order off ebay (only a couple of quid apiece or even less sometimes ). Far prefer a physical book and always give them away when finished , I never bin them, books are far too precious for that .
Still got about 18 Lee Child , 5 Bernard Cornwell and 6 Simon Scarrow books on the shelf to read - should last me 3 or 4 years .
Golfforall Oh thank you for this. I'll have a look at these. I spend all day on the laptop at work so like a paper book too thank you for your recommendation.
Yep ... hubby and I both enjoy his books ... you've reminded me .....will have to re-visit.....
