IMDb is going to close down the Discussion Boards later this month.
News
On February 20, the IMDb website will no longer offer discussion boards for fans and casuals to talk about films, shows and other boards that they have.
This is seriously going to make IMDb an irrelevant website and for anyone that want to read reviews then those people will use YouTube, Rotten Tomatoes and MetaCritic.
The heart and soul of IMDb to me and to many others, was the fact that it brought people together to talk about films and tv series. *sigh* :(
Here is the statement by IMDb:
IMPORTANT: IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
IMDB is based just up the road from me in Bristol
I occasionally ventured into the discussion sections but they never seemed that busy! Although, to be fair, it was usually when I've been trying to verify whether a pre-production Van Damme film was ever going to be released or not.
Are there forums on Rotten Tomatoes and MetaCritic? If not, do you think they'll spot an opportunity and set them up?
Hi Kelsey right now, there's really nothing remotely close to what IMDb is offering in terms of discussion boards. You have GameFaqs, Reddit and the usual misc sections of websites but they're not anywhere near as good to discuss films/shows as IMDb has it.
It's really strange that they're going to shut down the boards because they're not "positive" or providing a "useful experience" which is a complete lie. Anyone that has used the boards to discuss and find old films/shows knows that they are indeed extremely useful!
RIP IMDb. IMDb after February 20 won't be the same.
Damn. I can't believe it's already gone.
Will try to use Previously.TV as a replacement but not sure it'll ever be the same.
