How Can We All Improve Chat?

Other

Please as you read do not think I am criticising or trying to push my own ideas forward but.......

I sometimes get a little frustrated with chat because

  1. Quite a lot of topics can be posted in a relatively short time and I do tend to concentrate on the first page, possibly missing some good topics.
  2. Sometimes I might update a post rather than start a new one but doubt many people see it.
  3. I think we all tend to add comments to the main poster without reading the other posts, often repeating.
  4. Many topic posters do not reply to those who bother to comment so not really a chat, is it? I counted 10 topics on first page where OP had not replied, even up to 4 days later.
  5. Invariably there are those we tend to chat with more than others but no way are they going to see a comment they may wish to join in unless you randomly tag them.

I won't say more but I can think of several ways to help with these things but what about you, or do you feel it is fine as it is?

What do you think of this?

These are all valid points and I have to agree with the point that, unless I am tagged, I miss out on things that I would enjoy reading. I'm always happy to be tagged. After a while on this site it becomes obvious who the reliable chatters are - by that I mean that they can be relied on to:- post a topic and come back regularly to interact with people who have taken the time to join the conversation. I would really like to see the poster come back to the thread within 24 hours or lose the points awarded. (after all, the posting is instantaneous so the poster is around..... there has also been a trend to comment multiple times on one's own topic or deal and doesn't seem a fair to the ethos of the site) By that I mean before anyone else - so point collection.

Hi angemski I have noticed topic and first comment posters a lot lately, more have switched on to this.

My own view is that if topics did not receive any points at all there would be better quality topics posted as a genuine means to communicate. Chat would be more interesting and points could always be awarded for say, 5 comments received. Just as points are awarded for 3 plus likes.

Currently awaiting plumber with parts so hopefully warm and cosy tonight lol. Oooh that sounds a bit off!

This is one of the things I feel is a bit hit and miss about chat Dilligaf . You can have an interesting topic, make comments and read others but then, unless you are personally replied to or tagged, you may miss further discussion you might wish to be part of. We may go back and see latest comments at bottom but would we go through all the replies on a popular thread? Probably not.

Loislane I don't think it had anything to do with you - it could have just run it's course and admin ended it or perhaps, (I didn't see it so this is supposition) some comments veered off and got too personal and that would have incurred a locked result. Really nice to see that you've embraced the two way convo though.

Yes, just noticed this. Usually the person who locks a chat topic puts an explanation as to why. I myself did not see anything untoward although I came late to it and saw some people had objected to a post which was deleted. Oh well.

I don't think it had anything to do with you but with the insensitive comment made by another member. I imagine that someone reported it and to avoid further comments that could be upsetting, they locked the chat. I honestly don't think it was your post that was the issue but rather complaints about a comment. Don't let it stop you from posting or asking for advice in the future.

Like most forums its usually down to political correctness and libtards trying to shut down honest debate in my experience - people only want to hear others agree with them or give them likes - free speech is dead sadly!

I contribute and collaborate with others on my Freebie and Comp Wins page and everyone just adds comments as they go. It keeps it all in one thread and works well for those who participate.

I scan the first page sometimes but have noticed that some of the topics are just repeated by accident. I think it may need to be some quality control in this area. I really do not think there is a need for points per chat. It's just a nice addition to the site. Perhaps if the points were taken away, things would sharpen up.

Tom do you have a view on the future of the chat section?

Cheers. Xx

Ceebers I really enjoy your thread and occasionally contribute. Some members are willing to be guided to the thread but I think some people take it personally which is rather sad. I don't think they realise that we all dip in and out of it to see what's been won or received. Perhaps the chat limit should be extended to a two month turnaround because the duplicates get boring.

Hi Ceebers I was wondering if it may be worth closing down the original one and starting a fresh one? Lots of folk may not feel up to wading through 4,000 plus comments and I am not sure how many people realise that by clicking on the date on the right it takes you to the most recent post.

Please can I reach 50,000 points and get my next voucher? If I get to 49,995 and there no more points, I am not going to be a happy bunny. Its taken me years to get this many. As far as topics, I could start loads on music and books, but I don't think anyone would join in as my tastes are well, different, shall I say? I would like a 'what are you reading' thread that could keep being added to. I've usually got a book on the go. What kind of topics are people wanting? There are many subjects I study but its not popular culture. I find myself really liking dolems. What were they used for? Do we live in an electric universe? Were the Gnostics right about the Archons controlling the human race? Was a Jesus a magician? what are people's experiences of using Orgone? These are just some of topics going around in my head. I don't mention it because I don't think any would want to talk about this. Image

Hi Shelley, if you get to that amount just one more deal or comp will get you there lol. Actually I started a thread 'anyone fancy joining a book club' so you may like to do a chat search for it as there are lots of recommendations, I would love for it to be kept up. We also started a baby club at the same time but eventually they slip back as more new threads are added.

I am sure many folk would contribute to the threads you suggest but it gets a bit repetitive when people ask things like jam v. Marmite or Cats v. Dogs. Netflix suggestions is not a bad thread but a new one seems to be added every few days where once a month would be great.

Maybe forget the Jesus one as religion and politics are banned but why not try out your ideas, what is the worst that can happen......0 comments and I have had plenty of those!

Dilligaf isn't that what happens when you chat in real life? The words flow and veer off all over the place. Please excuse my ignorance but I would love to know what orgone/organites are. Please tell.

Dilligaf yes! well done on that description! That's orgonite. I do have some. I have put it around some of my plants. Has it done anything? Well, I'm pretty good gardener, so um, well, they grow without the orgone very well. Hmm. Is helping with EMFs? I have no idea. I have a lovely orgone coaster which I use to put my drinks on. I figure whether it actually does work or not it looks lovely (you can get some beautiful pyramid shaped designs etc) and hopefully it is doing something, which is a bonus. If you google Orgone wikipedia doesn't like it and says it is pseudoscience; then again, wiki would. The great pyramid at Giza wasn't a tomb and it ties in with orgone, earth energies. Read a good book on pyramids in January from the 70s called the secret power of pyramids taking about the shape, giza and orgone. here's a photo from the Etsy site of the coaster I have. Image

Dilligaf Nice! I've just read your post about Orgone. I have bought some and I have thought about rounding up the supplies to make some. Maybe one day I will. I have some tower busters, a coaster, a necklace and some small love hearts and little mini round circles that came as free gifts when I bought the main items.

Dilligaf Do you sell them on Ebay or Etsy? I'm not sure if Shungite is in mine as I can't remember what the most recent item I bought had listed. I will make a note of that for future purchases.

You're very welcome x That really made me smile about having the week off for your birthday as I do the same and we share the same payday πŸ˜‚That's so lovely about meeting up with a friend you haven't seen in a long and hope you had a lovely time. That sound so wonderful about spending tomorrow with the Coatis and foxes. I'm sure it'll be an unforgettable experience. I hope you'll treat yourself to something lovely on Thursday 😍

Lynibis The "this vs that" threads are now known as "this or that".

There's actually 3 of the latter on the first page right now.

Yes you are right RegularComper90. I have changed my stance a bit on this one. I go along with the don't comment if you don't like it brigade now as I have always been very surprised at how many people answer such questions. It is not chat to me but it obviously is for others so who am I to complain. I just see them as clogging the system as they push back other topics that are doing well as I am sure that many folk are like me and rarely go past the first page.

As you know already, we both seem to feel the same way about boring and repetitive topics. Here's what I think could/should be done:

  1. Extend the 30 day limit on when you can make a post on a topic previously covered. Around 2 or 3 months is more reasonable. This should be applied to posting freebies also, as I keep seeing the same ones being posted.
  2. Pin topics with the most frequently asked questions, so that there will then be no need for members to start a new one asking a common question.
  3. Don't reward points for anything chat related. Do we really need points for making chat topics? Sharing deals/competitions/freebies definitely as that is what the site is all about as well as it taking time and effort to find them. But as for chat, anyone can start a new topic with little or no effort.

Some great points. I think the topic generation time should be looked at. Removing points would certainly help with quality and repetition. I see some people going back every month or so to repeat the same listings. Adding things like a free leaflet? It's always free and this really is not so helpful. There are some frequent offenders too!

The freebie chat page I started has created a lovely community of people who regularly contribute. I would love this page to be pinned so we can drop into the page with ease. I enjoy chatting with everone on the page and it's been fun.

I do not think points are needed for chat... I really don't. I think the points should only be awarded if Latest Deals benefits, such as deals or vouchers.

Ceebers And I know EXACTLY who those frequent offenders are which you are referring to.

The freebie chat page is brilliant and a great way to inspire others, particularly new members. That one should definitely be pinned.

The chat section is just a place for us to chill out and talk about what's happening in the news, etc. Points definitely shouldn't be rewarded for this. I consider the chat section as being like break times at work. You don't get paid during break times in many places.

I think they need to relax what you can chat about as lots of stuff being duplicated but you cant talk about 2 topics which would get a good debate,

Hi, I am fairly new to this site and really enjoy chat. I have only asked one question here which was about doing my first boot sale and had lots of brilliant advice and tips which made me much better prepared. I have had some interesting chats on here about everything from friendships, selling clothes online to having a child in hospital. I do think that it would be nice for people to come back to a thread and reply to people who have taken the time to offer help to their question. I have seen people being called sheep if they don't agree about certain things and find that frustrating as we all have our own opinions. It's great to have healthy debate and offer advice and support as we all have different life experiences etc πŸ˜πŸ¦‹
