Iron Buy or Not

Ask a Question

When do you realize that it is time to buy a new iron? Mine still does the job but it has a black burnt and I can't get rid of it. Tried even scratching it.

Assuming the sole plate of iron is stainless steel it's worthwhile trying to remove black burn mark with tin foil: Scrunch up a piece of allumuninium tin foil up into a ball and then dip in water, then scrub the stain with it after a short time the water will turn black, that black liquid is one of the best stainless steel cleaners you can find, keep scrubbing with foil until stain disappears.

Apparently there is a chemical reaction between the steel and alluminium that creates the cleaner, this trick works for most stains on stainless steel. It will not create scratch marks either.

davidstockport thanks for this. I will definitely try it tomorrow. When you say the water will turn out black do you mean after you put back the ball there once you scrub it against the iron?

I bit the bullet and bought a new iron in the past year. I found one with a longer lead. There was nothing wrong with my old one but the newer one glides over fabric and the long lead is an absolute bonus. Treat yourself.

Our iron is probably 12 years old. I will buy a new one when it stops working.

Have you tried an iron cleaning stick? They melt off the burn in seconds

Mined the same. The last time I got a new iron was when the last one fell off ironing board and broke

I’ve not had a traditional iron in years, as I tend to only steam out the clothes if needed.
