What Irritates You?

Ask a Question

For me.

When someone you vaguely know says “see you later, mate”

Someone asks for help/advice and it’s given, they don't say thank you. Was it useful or not?

I ask for help/advice and the specific person says ‘I’ll get back to you’ and are never heard from again.

Old people who don't say thank you after you've held the shop door open for them 😠

For goodness sake, it is not only old people who do not say thank you if you hold open a door. I often do so for youngsters, mothers, men, women, and it is an equal mix who say thank you or not.

Lynibis I saw a young lad of maybe 12 - 13 wait for about four pensioners to walk down a path before he did and not one of them said thank you. I think it's just more noticeable because we expect people to have picked up basic manners by that age. It's not a sweeping statement branding everybody in that age bracket as rude.

Lynibis No use trying to reason with the unreasonable Lyn. I know you're on the elderly side and he knows you're older than he is - hence the almost snide reply of "And?"

Being older than both of you I find that "irritating". I often hold doors open for people younger than myself. (some say thankyou - but a smile is enough for me) I also say thanks to anyone who holds a door open for me.

Pppathome Are you referring to me this time? If so, clarification please or are you still after TheChimp. FYI I consider one word comments in the middle of chats rude, useless and a waste of time!

Don't you feel self-satisfied just by knowing you are doing the right thing or do you need to be instantly thanked as well?

Lynibis You expect better from the elderly. I agree that it's all types and all ages that can be ignorant but it seems worse when it is pensioners doing it.

1ofanotherkind I am 68 and always hold open doors for male, female, old, young, I also smile and say hello when passing people, help shorter people reach things on high supermarket shelves etc. I was brought up to always say please and thank you.

As I said, young and old can be equally rude but the very rudest remark was directed at me by a group of 4 teen girls who passed me by and one loudly said '(expletive) hell, if I looked like that I would top myself'.

Just as well I had the mental strength to shrug it off.

Lynibis You're a better person than me then. If those little twats said something like that about me I'd make sure that they NEVER said it to me or anybody else again! 😏

Oh I forgot to mention that I'm not that much younger than you, lol

  1. People starting chat topics and not giving their own opinion on the subject they are asking about and not showing any interest in users' responses.
  2. Road users not using their indicators when turning.
  3. Pavement cyclists.
  4. Using the "F" word in every other sentence when there's around 170,000 other words in the English language.
  5. People not saying "thank you" when you do something for them.
  6. Being screened out of surveys and getting told that you don't qualify, after already spending 10 mins answering the main questions.

RegularComper90 I saw this topic and knew I'd be replying........then saw your response and wondered if you're my sister from another mister. 😂 Only going to add - using 'like' throughout conversation so I barely get the sense of the convo.

angemski I don't understand why "like" has become such a common word filler particularly among teenagers. A statement such as "It like makes no sense" doesn't make any sense.

RegularComper90 It's all part of a bigger problem. They are used to communicating via social media more than in real life. You only have to look at the grammar used by some people online. It's a genuine shock to the system when they have to string an entire sentence together in person. Using the word like for that purpose has been around since the 90s though. It's worse in America and we're now at a stage where the UK is becoming America with young adults having grown up watching 'Friends' etc.

Survey screening seems quite common - silly intro questions as well that ask for the same data twice (like which County do you live in... which part of the UK is that)
