Italian Village Forbids Residents from Becoming Ill

In the News

How do you prevent people being ill and overloading the health system ?

You just ban them from becoming ill , easy

Now why didn't the NHS think of this !

No, it's not an April fools joke but what the people in a small village in Southern Calabria have been told

They have been given strict instructions not to behave in a way to cause themselves harm, not leave the house too often, or engage in sport or activities that could cause injury

Not too difficult concerning the latter as almost half of the population are elderly and over 65

So i cannot see many paragliding down the surrounding hills at anytime soon

Their health system is one of the worst and poorest in Italy and has strong Mafia influences with ongoing corruption

So this could be the main reason in its' decline not that the population are accident prone

When I was in the WRNS over 50 years ago I had a fine taken from my salary for self inflicted sunburn. I have always felt that there should be some sort of disincentive to stop people doing risky stuff that could result in injury.

Illness is one thing but doing risky stuff off your own back without due care or supervision is quite another. I know I sound harsh but drinking, drugs, smoking and diet related medical problems are self inflicted too.

However, your topic does take it a bit too far!

Lynibis Yes i agree L, they are almost saying don't bother falling ill , you will not be treated

I should imagine a lot of the health funding is syphoned off by the mafia , i had first hand experience of their involvement in Calabria many years ago and they still control that part of the country

telmel it's awful to think of crime syndicates that weaken the quality of life for their own people. With ever growing populations things can only get worse which is why I have a bee in my bonnet about those who have loads of kids.

For some unknown reason I am reminded of that song Keep young and beautiful. I would do whatever the lads said if they fed me carbonarra, ice cream and sent me out on regular trips on the lakes.

Jerseydrew I doubt they have any choice in the matter J, if they need anything they normally have to go cap in hand to the mafia
