I've Just Found Out That Ebay Are Going To Stop Selling Medicines.....

Ask a Question

Although I don't know how far ebay are likely to go with this or when they intend to start I wondered if it is likely to affect you or people you know and whether you agree with them that it is a good idea?

What do you think of this?

I didn't know they even sale medicine. If registered pharmacists are selling it's ok otherwise it shouldn't be allowed anyway.

I didn't read it decom I was told yesterday by a registered pharmacist on ebay, that I regularly buy something from, for somebody else, who doesn't use the Internet, when they hadn't got the product I usually buy I asked them why and that's how I found out! x

Will st johns wort be included? I hope not. It is a herb but a strong one. I will be growing it this year, just in case it ever becomes hard to buy, but the prices vary greatly between sellers and some times I do use Ebay for it.

JoTarpley I finally had about half an hour spare to order some last night so it would appear these are not being banned. I take it for my fibromyalgia and really without it, I would struggle to walk I get so stiff in my joints and tired out. It really is a life saver for me.

I started buying them on there too dholly39 , for somebody else again, for some reason there's a world shortage of, for example, Ibuprofen, if you look there are a few people still selling their stock, I'm not sure whether they can just sell the stock they've listed and not restock, I'm not sure how it's working but I should nip over quick and see what you can pick up, at the moment you can buy 32 Ibuprofen ok if you want more you have to fill in a questionnaire, it depends what sellers are still there and what you can get, good luck x

I think it's very unlikely that eBay UK will stop selling over-the counter (OTC) medicines as you can buy them almost everywhere anyway.

The basic rules are:

  1. Private sellers are not allowed to sell medicines on eBay
  2. Prescription drugs, or drugs containing prescription strength medication, are not allowed to be sold on eBay
  3. Most over-the counter (OTC) products may be sold on eBay by business sellers, if they don't require a prescription from, or the supervision of a licensed practitioner to dispense.

In the UK, St John's wort is a herbal remedy that has been used for hundreds of years and is an over-the-counter remedy.

Different countries have different rules about what is and isn't available OTC. In the USA and Ireland for example, St John's wort is not available OTC.

Well I've been told twice now by 2 different Sellers, why would they say that if it wasn't true, they want your custom, that's why they are there! x

JoTarpley Hi,

Falsified medicines are a major threat to public health and safety. Anyone selling medicines to the public via a website must be registered with MHRA and display an Distance Selling logo on every page of the website offering medicines for sale.

The aim of the Distance Selling logo is to help members of the public to identify websites that can legally sell medicines.

Perhaps your sellers are unregistered with the MHRA and eBay are clamping down on them. (I.e. the issue is that some sellers can no longer sell medicines on eBay, rather than eBay will no longer sell medicines). Or maybe they are falling foul of some other new regulations.

I found the following on Google: (from a year ago)

New requirements for selling medicine on eBay

As part of eBay‘s cooperation with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) there will be a new enforcement of an eBay Medicine and Healthcare products policy. This means that from the 21st of January 2019, if you sell over the counter medicine on eBay you’ll have to be registered with the MHRA.

Business sellers offering online medicines are required:

to be registered with the MHRA; and

to display the EU common logo by including the link to the MHRA register approval page on each listing offering medicines.

As of the 21st of January 2019, any seller that does not comply with the above requirements will be prohibited from selling medicines on eBay.

eBay haven’t specified what enforcement steps they will be taking, but it will be reasonable to assume that if your listings don’t fully comply by the 21st of January that they will be scanning listings selling medicine on eBay and taking them down.

This would be a shame. EBay was the only place I was able to get some painkillers recently as all the shops were sold out due to stockpiling.
