Jackfruit as a Meat Substitute

Ask a Question

I’ve tried the free jackfruit burrito every Monday this month from Tortilla and though it’s tasty, I doubt I‘d ever consider it to be an apt meat substitute

So far, I think some soy products, mushroom/fungus foodstuff and seitan have managed to imitate meat well, although as a meat eater, you can always tell the difference

What is the best meat substitute you’ve ever had?

Hi hspexy sorry to say I've never heared of jackfruit . It's sounds nice would love to try it. Not that I would give up meat. I do try and have a meat free meal once a week. All so were I live they may not be selling it yet. Will look out for it. Thank you for sharing this. I do like trying out new food. Image

Hi nicolajaynehend you’re welcome 😊 it is definitely worth trying, and there’s never any harm in having more fruit in your diet, especially the exotic kinds. I hope you get to try it soon 😊

I've had Jackfruit in a spiced lime salad and I have to say it was really tasty and had a meaty texture but I don't think it can really compete my favourites (mushrooms) on a regular basis. I've tried tofu at home but only once really enjoyed it and that was in a restaurant when it seemed denser than anything I could have cooked. Unfortunately, I'm a cheese fiend so when I avoid meat I tend to go for some squeaky, dry fried slices of halloumi.

I've just seen an ad for Jaimie Oliver's new programme on next Monday so may be worth a watch - Jaimie's Meat Free Meals.

I like jackfruit but it's no pulled pork!

Try Garden Gourmet burgers if you can. I honestly couldn't tell them apart from meat, but I had loaded the burger with other stuff like cheese and jalapeños, so that may have masked the taste (though saying that, I've done the same with other fake burgers and could tell). The texture was right too!

My favourite meat substitute is definitely Jackfruit as this has tasted the most similar to me. It is very tasty and feel like my mind is tricked as my mind is like it looks and tastes like meat so it is but is not actually. I don't think other meat substitutes tastes as similar to meat as Jackfruit does!

I watched the programme ’dirty vegan‘ with Matt Pritchard and was quite suprised as some of the stuff they used as substitutes. He used a jackfruit as pulled pork and it looked quite nice. Seemed like a proper mission to cut up and cook though. Im not vegetarian or vegan so i dont need meat substitutes. I did try quorn mince before as it was lower calories but it was disgusting 🤣
