Judging a Book by Its Cover
Ask a Question
I know people have a knee jerk reaction when asked such things but on some level at least on initial meeting me all judge on appearance. How much does this form your opinion of someone or is it quickly irrelevant?
I think you can tell a lot about someone from an initial meeting and I do make judgements accordingly BUT we all make mistakes especially if someone is using subterfuge! Appearances aren't always the bee all and end all.
During my years on earth (well over 60) I have found that those who look kind and happy usually are. Those who look miserable, aggressive, unfriendly etc. usually are. It is as if a person's character gradually begins to reflect in their face. I have seen it in babies and children too. Babies just a few months old gurgling and smiling who immediately capture your heart (even if they are not particularly pretty looking) and those who just stare and look away or constantly cry and moan. Often the latter have not had a good start in life but I think it sets a trend for the rest of their life as those around them have not reacted positively so they learn not to expect it.
As with everything there are exceptions to the rule. I have a good friend (we work together, exchange xmas presents and meals etc.), but when she first met me it got back to me that she said many uncomplimentary things about me without even knowing me....she had judged me on my looks and I have often been told I come across like a police officer or school teacher (this is shyness initially until I get to know someone) but when people get to know me they realise I am friendly and kind and share food and deeds with everyone I know. Yes, I had a difficult lonely childhood, which probably shows in the adult I now am, but I have fought against it all my life and have only a handful of times had cross words with other human beings, and then only when provoked beyond endurance.
I thought this was a thread about judging actual books by covers. Yes and yes to both. I like books that are pre decimal currency as I find these covers were more tasteful and thoughtful. The contents and covers match a lot better; especially, pelican blue covers from the 50/60/70s. I find those very pleasing to the eye. You know sometimes I'm so autistic, you can tell a mile off from my replies. Its great being an aspie in a 2nd hand book shop. but yes, I am guilty of sizing someone up by their dress even though I used to dress rock and I know rockers are usually very shy gentle people, not the image they give off.
