Would You Keep Chickens?
Ask a Question
I was just watching Windy City Rehab, which is about restoring historical homes in Chicago. This episode they replaced a chicken coop which was in the shape of the house.
It made me think how many people now keep chickens, I don't as I would be afraid that the chicken food would attract vermin.
I'd be too heartbroken if a fox were to get them, which seems to happen a lot hereabouts.
I hadn't realise how much of a problem foxes are, I agree it would be heartbroken especially if you had
to explain it to a small child
I live in on a farm and have chickens My chickens are free to Rome in the day time and at night they all go back to the coop at night which is safe for them i love hearing the Cockerell crow early morning.
Love chickens can’t beat fresh eggs. We don’t have the garden space etc but my younger cousin has about 20 we love to go feed them
I have 4, but have a run so the fox can’t get them. They are really old and don’t lay anymore, my son absolutely loves them and so do I
My sister had chickens they are lovely. But having the male caused a problem as it woke the neighbours. Just have females you will be fine.
They eat all the bugs in the garden. Make sure they have somewhere safe at night to hide from foxes.
I wouldn't mind having chickens but we have a lot of foxes in my local area, so I don't think it would be a good idea.
Id love to keep chickens but its just not practical where I live plus it would be difficult for me health wise. However if I lived in another life, id really love to keep Ducks they'd be more of a pet aswell
I love chickens. But I am too afraid to have them because of Foxy (the name we have given to our local fox).
My husbands uncle has chickens. He has them fenced in, in a specific part of the garden. You could see them from the living room window. First time we took our dog to visit she spent the whole time watching them out the window and trying to figure out how to get at them!
There have been people who tried in the past, but we get foxes around here, so not a good idea
I have been really surprised, going by the amount of comments, how common foxes have become. I'm not aware of any in my local area
beccatavender they seem to be everywhere in London, but I’d expect them to be, as we have taken over a lot of the woodlands
Loads of people in our village, including my next door neighbour, keep chickens. It's common place here in the countryside. I love hearing them.
Chickens..did someone say chickens lol..i love our girls..lovely fresh eggs every day..they love to follow me around the garden seeing what i am up to..when my granddaughter visits. She loves picking them up and talking to them..there are so many chickens that need a forever home. Rescue centres are always needing homes for them...oh and don't worry about vermin..you could always take a cat on..one of our cats like to sit in the coop with the girls
My work mate keeps chickens and she’s always filling us up with boxes of eggs. I like the idea of it but I don’t think I could with being in a built up estate. Think the neighbours would have an issue. Maybe one day
Chicken keeping is great. Like anything though you must do it properly to protect the girls from Mr Fox. As long as you get a fox-proof overnight coop you should be ok. And for the sake of your neighbourhood relationships don’t get a cockerel.
