Did You Know the Amazon Rainforest Has Been Burning for 3 Weeks?

In the News

Although we might not live in the rainforest or nearby but how we treat this world effects it.

We live in a society where we'd rather cut down tree's to build homes because it's a convient way to make money.

People don't recycle and it all ends up in landfill

Driving to the shop etc rather then walking.

We are slowly killing the planet

I did not know....it is very sad.

Like the effect what we make on the environment...not using plastic means we cut out more trees and that usually effects the Amazon forest too.

When a fire is active for its third week, the govt has evidently failed to try and attempt to keep it under control. Bolsonaro was so promising but it was all a lie. But whad'ya expect, it's politics.

Brazil would have been better off if it was never colonized.

Brazil is definitely in bad hands when it comes to its politicians, not one is actually good.

Bolsonaro made it sound like he's okay with the wildfires and although for the rest of us, wildfires are infuriatingly horrible, for some businessman they're a means to an end so they don't mind it happening. In Portugal wildfires happen every summer and they're started by men who either have something to gain or like to see it burning (lock them up in mental hospitals).

Also, please don't compare Notre Dame to the Amazon (not directed at AliceBaker or anyone specifically). Notre Dame is a historical building and the Amazon is part of our ecosystem stability, this should be obvious but a lot of people don't have a clue why Notre Dame is deemed so important.

Well, I was born and lived in Brazil for many years, so I can talk about it properly.

The fires happen every year, Brazil is basically a commodity country, all we have and export are ores and agribusiness. The difference now is that the new president is aligned with Donald Trump, does not believe in global warming and fights fiercely against any person or organization who dares to defend the environment, he is 100% on the economic side, no matter what it takes.

But as I said at the beginning, it happens every year and always has. August and September are the months when large farmers prepare the soil for planting, and burning is the cheapest method, even if it will take its cost later on, the focus being immediate short-term profit.

As I usually say, I expect nothing different from the human being. Every day I see people throwing rubbish on the streets, or even in the building where I live, throwing recyclable rubbish into the general waste container, with no concern that that 100% recyclable plastic or paper will be burned in an incinerator or thrown in the soil, taking years to decompose. Unfortunately this is a reality in the vast majority of countries, most people just don't care.

I knew but not because of any tv media I find out by Facebook. The mainstream media are selective on what they feed the public.
