Do You Know Any Pop Songs Inspired by Classical Music?
Ask a Question
Memories by Maroon 5 uses the same chord progression as Canon in D by Pachelbel. Do you know any more pop songs that draw on classical music?
There have been dozens, a few that come to mind (all sung by Elvis) are:
It's Now or Never - uses same tune as "O Solé Mio".
Surrender - uses same as "Torna a Surriento"
She Wears My Ring - "La Golondrina"
So, wait? One of the biggest-ever stars of rock music got famous by ripping off classical music? That's kinda cheeky. Thank you for the examples.
kfe202 I wouldn't exactly call it a rip off - if there is any "rip off" it's more the person writing the words to very old music who actually benefits. Anything written before 1925 is "fair game".
Just thought of another sung by Elvis "Can't Help Falling in Love" (1961) which used the music of "Plaisir d'amour" composed in 1784,
Pet Shop Boys - Go West, based on Pachelbel Can in D.
Lady Gaga - Alejandro, based on Csárdás - Monti.
Take That - Never Forget, based on Verdi - Tuba Mirum from Requiem.
Lana Del Rey - Old Money, based on Nino Rota – Romeo & Juliet Theme
Gosh, I'm surprised at Lady Gaga taking a cue from classical music! That's given me a cool idea for a composition project. Thank you.
Emmersen Lake & Palmer - Pictures at an Exhibition - its playing right now on my You Tube account - pure coincidence!
A Whiter Shade Of Pale (Procol Harem) perhaps the biggest selling pop song of all time, (sold over 10 million) is very strongly influenced by a Bach composition too.
Classical music or classic music?
If you meant the latter, there's a song composed in 2019 which sounds like it belongs in the 1980's. I can't remember the name, but I've heard it so many times.
S Club 7's hit called 'Natural' was a reworking of Fauré's Pavane. Little Mix also sampled the piece as their intro on 'Little me'. Take That or the original Barry Manilow 'Could it be magic' came from Chopin. It happens more than people think.
I am not into pop songs...but all the music connect somehow.
Like pop music uses professional drummers sometimes.
I know more classical music infused metal...than pop
