Leaving Children Home Alone

Ask a Question

At what age would you leave your child home alone? my oldest is in year 8 he’s 13 I work school hours so I can pick him up and drop him off at school and during the holidays he comes to work with me because we have a family business. A lot of his friends stay home alone as there is no child minders or holiday clubs for teenagers. I hate to leave him home alone. How does everyone else deal with these things?

I was left alone at 11. My parents worked different work patterns so I would often have to come home from school alone. I think I turned out alright!!!

I think it depends on the sensibility of the child. Some kids I know I would not leave, others I think they would be fine.

I was left ag home from 12 during the holidays when my mum worked. She worked part time so was home by 1pm. I often went to friends or they would come to mine. I was a sensible child. I knew what I should and shouldn't do when mum wasn't there and she trusted me. It totally depends on the child as to what age you would leave them.

My son is 13 also he will be 14 in Feb. Some of his friends have keys to their houses to go home after school and are on their own until their parents come home. The only time ive left him on his own and its only been this year is if im popping to the local shop quickly or taking my MIL home after a visit (25 mins).

That’s what I’m like with my son. I think if I didn’t work schools I would have to leave him alone. I do worry though he doesn’t have the freedom like some of his friends and that he does need to learn life skills at some point

I was left alone from the age of 11 i think it depends on the child's maturity. My mum had to work 2 jobs and no childminders would take me on at 11 as id started high school and was told i was too old to be looked after. I stayed inside the house if not at school and had a house key in case of an emergency and also had my mums number and work number just in case.

A lot of parents have no choice because there isn’t a childcare option when you reach high school.

I was left alone around 11. My dad worked late & mum started work at tea time, id often be left for a couple hours between mum going to work & dad coming home. My kids were about 13 -11 when we started leaving them alone. It depends how mature & trustworthy they are.

I cant remember about being home alone, but I know I was about 8 or 9 when my parents gave me my own set of keys and let me walk home with my little brother after school...
