Should You Let a Stranger in Despair in to Your Home?

I wouldn't let in either I may stay outside but am such a nervous person anyway I most prob wouldn't answer the door

I've had a woman knock on my door a few years back at around 2am. I talked to her out of the bedroom window, she claimed to have been in trouble with someone and they were after her and she wanted letting in. I got my wife to ring the police and I went downstairs and spoke through the living room window. The moment I mentioned the police were on there way already she ran off down the street. Police told us it's a scam and others wait around the corner. Always be wary but never just dismiss people neither

My daughter in law answered my door one day assuming I knew the man who was in distress. i called the local community police who came round very quickly to our aid. The man had walked out of the care home he was staying in for his end of life care and was extremely confused. Such a shame to see a proud man so scared

I have thought about this before and i dont know what i would do. I would phone the police first.

Knowing the type of ilk who live around my way, I'd be very wary, but I wouldn't not want to help a genuine person so I'd just call emergency services.

Nope. People have also been known to fake needing help to rob you for many moons. I don’t trust easily so wouldn’t trust a random stranger.

I’d possibly call the police depending on the situation so if they need help the police could help

I wouldn’t let anyone in. I think I would call the police. You never know and wouldnt want to risk anything happening

I wouldn't be comfortable opening my door to a stranger and would call the police to help her.

I wouldn't let anyone in, no way. I would call the police and say someone needs help. I am a big fan of A Clockwork Orange and Alex and his droogs pulled that stunt.

We've not let a stranger in at the door but we saw a young girl in the street once, silly early in the morning being chased by her boyfriend, crying and in a state. We of course let her in, called her a taxi and then waited with her until it arrived. We've actually done that twice now and would do it again. No danger element but I was a little put out that neither time the parents contacted us afterwards (assuming they knew, of course). I have daughters and if someone had done that for them I'd have taken it upon myself to find the people afterwards and thank them. We also found a lad, maybe early twenties in our garden once who was in a state - didn't want him staying in the house but we let him sleep in the outbuilding for an evening and he was gone the next morning.

When someone knocks on your front door during the day do you always ask who it is before opening it?

And if they say 'Delivery, Amazon, or Postman' do you open it then?

When you do open the door, do you always use a door security chain?

I'm just curious. I have a door security chain but rarely use it during the day. And usually just open the door when someone knocks.

When I was six I used to walk just over a mile to school, and when I was seven I cycled. People used to look out for each other and their kids.

We seem to have become a lot less friendly in the UK in recent years. I think that's a change for the worse, and something we should all make a big effort to reverse, for our children's sake as well as our own. I dislike this jumpy, trust no-one attitude.

When I was 19 I hitch-hiked over 5,000 miles in the USA without coming to (or doing!) any serious harm. I was the stranger that hundreds of people let into their cars, and have now seen more of America than 99% of Americans. Since then I have travelled to over 30 countries reasonably trouble free.

I think it's a great shame to live your life being scared of everything and everybody. There's a big world out there beyond your front door just waiting to be explored. Or you can choose to die without seeing it I guess - most people do.

i would never do that, i am sorry but my family is most important and their safe!we had once someone knocking on our doors early morning,and my partner went to see i said don't open the door as you never know he talked with him through the door ,the guy was insisting to be let in,i said call the police and the guy gone ,too many scams ,it's dangerous these days even wanting to help some one as unfortunately people are not genuine. Really hates how people are bloody lazy and try to scam others for things they worked their life!

You can’t trust anyone these days. Would definitely not let them in. You can never be too careful
