Can You Get Licence without Passport
Ask a Question
I've been told its easier to get apply for driving licence if you have passport but with current climate may not go abroad for years so prefer not to get one. Can I apply without one
Holding a passport does make it easier to apply for or renew a driving licence, you don't need to send a photograph. With your permission the picture from your passport can be used you don't need to send the passport it's transferred electronically from where the copy is kept. I've renewed my driving licence a few times totally online since I was 70.
It is possible to get a driving licence without being a passport holder though.
If renewing, it is requested that when you receive your new licence, if the old one has any remaining time on it and not declared LOST, that it is returned. That is obviously to comply with the law that makes it illegal to hold more than one current driving licence.
Yes. It’s just easier if you already have a form of id they can verify (passports can be cross checked easily via the government database). But I know people who’ve never been abroad, so no passport, yet they still got their driver’s licence using other paperwork
Imnotcheap She'll still need photo countersigned but as she's had a previous will be on the system so ID ing will be easier and not have to send Birth Cert. If they decide they want it they'll ask. Put the number of expired Passport in relevant section. (Paper form 1st Q second page)
It's much easier to apply for one as they can use your passport as your form of ID, can cross check it, can use the photograph from it etc but you can still apply for a driving license without one. It just means you will need to send in a photo and other forms of ID.
I find it very strange that you can end up with a 20 year old photo on your driving licence, mine looks nothing like me and rather makes a mockery of photo ID.
I suppose that is if after nearly ten years the picture was from a passport that was near its expiry date. It is of course possible if under seventy to have a driving licence that doesn't have a photo on it. (I didn't get a photocard licence until I was 70).
I was surprised to find that 3% of females could be fined £1,000 because they failed to change their name on driving licence when they married.
The way I see it is that could only apply if the woman changed the name she used when marrying (which isn't compulsory).

I got my drivers licence without having a passport. Had to have photo signed etc and send off birth certificates for id but was still pretty straightforward
