My last post was about correctly addressing envelopes.This one is a warning note to people who still like licking them closed.It seems that so doing may make the seal uneven! So now Royal Mail advises that we make sure that we secure all the openings.It is not about licking per se but about the importance of a good seal and I don't mean a well behaved sea mammal 
Oooh no!!, l couldn't pick an envelope, l use to have a small sponge in a bowl with some water and would always use that.
I would lick a few but drew a line at Christmas and licking loads .Pinkspirit A sponge would be a bit soggy cos I always overdo stuff.
To think I nearly joined the POtelmel When I was little my dad used to ask what the difference was between a postbox and an elephant's bum.When I hesitated he told me that he would not get me to post the letters.Parents can be weird!
I use sellotape to sell envelopes. I don't trust the seal. If the envelopes are old, they can dry out.
Yes I have a friend who does that.I use address labels and/or stickers or pictures/I like to jolly up my envelopes.Sherrifffroggy
Sherrifffroggy ...I use sellotape to seal the letters, I DON'T trust the postmen & I have good reason not to..Our daughter 's birthday money went missing when someone sent it by post ..
I use a little water on my finger and celotape anything that doesn't look secure but rarely send letters
I used to in the olden days but now I find it quite horrible, especially since COVID. Now I mostly use sellotape to post or just tuck in for hand delivery. My dad has used fun stickers at Christmas which I like the idea of but don't have many stickers on me. I don't post a lot any more.
For me it all depends on what i am sending, if its just a card or letter, i will lick the seal and not worry as i dont think there is anything worth taking and it doesnt matter if it does go missing. If its something more important or valuable, i would send recorded and seal with celotape.
jms19 self seal envelopes don't always do as they are told so sellotape does come in handy at times.
I used to love licking the envelopes especially at Christmas when there would be lots to do 
. I do sellotape them if they don't stick down well or come apart. Otherwise I just lick them and think nothing of it.
Stopped licking them ages ago - it’s unhygienic & one time, I even got a paper cut on my tongue…I either use self adhesives or lick my finger & run it across (and a bit of tape will seal it well)
MelissaLee1 indeed. It was one of those niggily pains, like a paper cut, like throbby & annoying, opposed to really, deeply painful. Let’s just say having anything salty was a pain !
hspexy I think I had a paper cut on my tongue in the past, not nice. I stopped licking them a long while ago and just use sellotape as a lot of the envelopes these days don’t always stick properly. I stopped putting any money and even cheques when posting as these did not always arrive. I just do bank transfers now.

and great pun for this chat topic! Urgh I don’t like licking them has a horrible taste and it’s just not damn sanitary use a glue stick! Or some tape 
kitty88uk adhesives on envelopes are non toxic so not really dangerous or unhygienic but they do have a few calories in lol

I use good old sellotape on envelopes works very well for me. Don't post things often usually returning junk mail back to sender. I dont put stamps on them so they have to pay for it
PhilipMarc I struggle getting sellotape off the reel.It always breaks and twists.I used to rip it with my teeth when younger and always got in trouble when caught.
KAW18 I Most envelopes nowadays are self seal fortunately.I secure with stickers and tape sometimes as well though.
The last batch of envelopes I bought were self-seal, which was great, but I mail things so rarely that they’ve gotten old and the sealing strips don’t work anymore, so I just end up taping them shut instead!
didbygraham I have a big pot of PV glue as well.Comes out once in a blue moon but mostly it just sits on the shelf like an ornament lol

I don't use many envelopes nowadays, but I always have some self sealing envelopes in stock should I need one, they are really cheap to buy, like £1 for 12 I think, I haven't actually licked an envelope for many years and don't intend to
