With your help, I already wrote a guide on How to save money at Asda (https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/guides/household-bills/how-to-save-money-at-asda) and another guide on How to save money at Morrisons (https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/guides/household-bills/how-to-save-money-at-morrisons)!
I would love if you could also leave a comment in both!
It's got to be the prices. I've been disappointed with the quality of some items and find many of the customers have little courtesy often blocking aisles etc and checkout can be very, very slow. However there are some great prices. Unfortunately just like Tesco I haven't really used Lidl because of the pandemic. I have a Aldi close by which opened last year but have never used that either. Lidl do some nice tinned tuna with a pull lid that is very cheap and good quality. Their 75p approx. 200g fruit and nut style chocolate bar is nice and great value. Their double cream is pretty cheap. Some of the veg can be decent and low price. Their instant freeze dried coffee is the same quality as elsewhere but cheaper. I'm not keen on their low quality and unhealthy parbaked bread though preferring proper baked bread that you would get from Tesco, Morrisons, Asda etc.
I love the fact their reductions go down 30% at least for short life items, none of that 5% off etc rubbish and for very short life products they want to get rid off they often reduce to 10p. Brilliant.
I used to like the middle isle but its been years since I bought anything there but in the past I got some decent items but nowadays prices seem better elsewhere like Ebay.
Why don't you shop at Aldi? I also like Lidl's tuna. I never shopped at Ebay. I need to try once.
I use Lidl quite often and one of the things I think they could improve is speed of service either by having more tills open or implement more self service. I hate waiting around in any supermarket but it in the current climate is even worse. The Price is the biggest thing that draws me to Lidl. Its hard to beat the cost and quality of the meat. I love the layered yoghurts they do. The only things I don't really like is the jars of sauces as I feel they are loaded too much with herbs and over powers the taste and the chocolate is no Cadburys
I like the fact that if you were to spell 'Lidl' backwards, you would get the letters LD in it.
We are finding LD everywhere these days. rsrsrsrsrs Saving money is the new mantra in 2021.
tamirescriscio I think I'm addicted to LD; I appear to be seeing it everywhere I go. x
I do my main shop in Lidl as it is the closest to me and for me it is the prices and the products. The products are fantastic quality and are so cheap. I haven't been disappointed with anything yet. I've never found customers block aisles or that the checkout is slow. I also love the Lidl app as you can save £12 a month if you spend £200 and you get vouchers for money off items. Last month I saved £17 on my shopping with the app, so saved me even more money.
Good to know that you are saving a lot with the app. I need to start using it more.
Before last years lockdown, I would visit lidl every week to have a browse down the gadget aisles where I've picked up some amazing bargains, I love their tools they are great quality and come with a 3 year warranty which you don't get in many places these days.
As for food stuff, I didn't buy a lot from there but from the things I did buy, I think their fresh meat and veg was good value and there bakery department was excellent.
Should be pointed out their bakery department for bread etc which they bake on the premises is parbaked which can taste fine but goes stale rapidly. It's where they half cook a loaf and inject with extra yeast and chemicals and then freeze. It can then be quickly cooked to completion in store in ovens to be sold, its the same technique as used in convenience stores and service stations. It is not as healthy especially if you are a bit allergic to high amounts of yeast but does mean they only cook what they need for selling so less waste. However the prepacked bread Lidl sell would likely be much healthier as less chemicals and less yeast.
Some people refuse to eat parbaked bread and is generally regarded as a low grade processed food but it has many commercial efficiency benefits. It should also be noted that even the big supermarkets that fully bake their own bread may still use parbaking for some speciality breads or cakes.
BonzoBanana I didn't know about this. To be 100% honest, I think the whole food industry has lots of secrets. Luckily, nowadays things are getting more and more transparent and the consumers taken more seriously.
BonzoBanana I know what you mean about the par baked goods, this has been ongoing for years in supermarkets, I used to work in ASDA and the only thing they made from scratch was pancakes and crumpets, the rest came in frozen, I did mention that their bakery was excellent, which I stand by, maybe if I ate bread and cakes on a daily basis like some people do, I'd have a different opinion but as it's only once or twice a week, I'm happy with that.
They have cheap prices, a great seasonal selection and I’m a huge fan of their bakery, especially the Portuguese egg tarts!
tamirescriscio when they’re fresh, they’re lovely. But even if they’re not, just pop them in the oven for 5 minutes and it is fluffy and crisp again
I started shopping in Lidl last year when a store opened in my area. However, I only shop there a couple of times a month to mainly get their Extra Mature Welsh Cheddar and a bar of Ritter Sport chocolate. Aside from the cheese, I wasn't overly impressed with the quality of their own product range. Although, I will buy some products from other brands sold in Lidl when I see them, as they tend to be cheaper.
We haven’t got one nearby but used to go when the £10 vouchers were in the newspapers. It was quite difficult to spend the total without buying alcohol. I always looked for their £1.50 fruit and veg boxes but was never lucky.
Are these vouchers still available? Their £1,50 boxes sells really quickly, unfortunately.
tamirescriscio no there were a few before Christmas and they were shared on LD I’m sure. The Metro did it and then it was The Times and The Sun.
It's got to be the middle of Lidl. You go in for a pint of milk and come out with a wet suit.
rsrsrsrs very true! When I don't buy something I see there and I like, I always regret! good finds!
I like the bakery! Haven't been to Lidl in a long time but always liked their bakery, thought they were good quality and still cheap
