Lipreading and Face Masks
Ask a Question
Anyone else realised just how much they rely on lipreading when speaking to other people? Now that we all wear face masks in public (with a few legitimate exceptions) I struggle to ‘hear’ people.
I sometimes say ‘I can’t hear you because of the face mask’ when really it’s because I used to be able to lipread their lips to correct any misunderstanding I had with the conversation . I wouldn’t say I was deaf or particularly hard of hearing, but still, it’s a struggle.
Same here, i dont have any problems with my hearing but i do struggle in shops when staff speak, especially when theyre behind the perspex screen.
Clerks sometimes have to repeat it twice because for me, their voices are muffled with the mask.
Masks are supposed to protect us from COVID, right? But...
PhilipMarc quite sobering watching that video. Makes you think we all need to don scuba diving gear and tanks to go to the shops.
This shouldn't be a surprise really as we all know that we can smell someone smoking from quite far away...
Yes, the more barriers there are the worse it becomes. Your own mask then a screen then their mask, it's terribly hard to hear correctly.
Me to I always lip read, but did not realised how much I relied on lip reading so I find I am now asking people to repeat them selfs and it’s even worse in a shop with the Perspex screen
I’ve seen people meet a friend in the supermarket and take off their masks to have a face to face chat!
