Living Lung Transplants

Ask a Question

Kyoto University Hospital report that a Japanese woman is the first Covid patient to be given a living lung transplant ie she received lung segments from both her son and husband. Her organs had failed due to damage caused by the coronavirus.

Isn’t modern medicine marvellous? Do you think this is something that may happen more often in the future?

Would be interesting if UK newspapers or 😜television followed this up.

Hope she makes a full recovery. This may well be the way forward for those struck down with multiple problems due to Covid. Wonder how many family members would volunteer?

I suppose they do this with other organs (kidneys etc) so it is just a progression. The sad fact is with disjointed families these days, even with a match, relatives may not be willing to help. I had been feeling that coronavirus had been taking the humanity out of the world so this an uplifting story.

tumblespots I feel you may be right about coronavirus taking humanity out of the world and it becoming a more selfish place. But, I find it amazing that this is the first recipient of organs necessitated by the virus. Also, the fact that both her husband and her son are matches.

BlueEyesX Is this the first that was done or just the first that took place? It is surprising that her husband was a match, that must be nearly as rare as hen's teeth.

tumblespots Kyoto University Hospital report this is the first ever Covid patient to have received lung segments from living persons. Can only assume she had recovered (if you ever do completely) but her lungs were in a bad way and that this was her most debilitating/urgent medical problem.

Perhaps hen’s teeth are less rare in Japan 😉
