Lockdown Effects Children's Language Skills.

In the News

There is growing evidence that lockdowns have had an impact on children developing their conversation skills. No play dates and interactions with other children and grandparents.

I'm deeply saddened by this article. I guess we will find out the full extent of these effects soon.....😥

This is just another of those unseen and uncounted negative consequences of the whole covid thing. Imagine how you and I feel about not being able to interact with our friends, family and neighbours. For children it just becomes normal and they will surely become much more introverted. It's not good for society, we need well rounded youngsters who are able to mix : confidence comes from positive interaction with other people not from being on your own.

Great minds think alike Ann, came here to say same. At the end of the day it is the ultimate responsibility of parents to see to all of their children's needs. If your child struggles at school you need to give extra schooling, spend time potty training, teaching to fasten clothes and shoe laces etc. And if your child is lacking conversational skills, talk to them!

My youngest son used to be asleep as his head hit the pillow but older one loved to chat. I would spend at least 20 minutes at bedtime discussing all sorts of things with him.

And don't start me on potty training, nothing more gag inducing than a 4 year old pooping in a nappy. Child lead my ****, it is our job to lead and teach!

Lynibis yes I understand some kids have learning disabilities whice is normally not picked up until to late into education, but teaching a kid to talk use toilet dress and wash themselves is a parents job.

Without a doubt, some children will have fallen behind with their language skills but this won't be the case in families that have used the time in isolation to talk to each other. It's also a very interesting concept of what "behind" with educational skills actually means - for instance the National Curriculum defined skills for 'average' (note that word) children to achieve at age 7,11 and 14 and then decreed that ALL children would get to these average levels.

It’s too early I believe to know how this lockdown has effected the children and adults alike. But clearly it’s going to have some effects on everyone in different ways

rossruby1977 yes I totally agree with you. It's a new experience for all of us. We've all had to change our habits in many ways. Let's see what becomes of it!

There was always going to be a issue with this with future generations. After all, most people now prefer to communicate online than in person

hspexy yes I think you're right about that. I think it's a shame though! 🤔

SAdeals tbh it’s perhaps some kind of ‘evolution’ - the younger generations are far more tech savvy and can quickly navigate the net, even though they may not have ’good’ social skills. It’s the future, I’m afraid

Unfortunately it will be the children most in need who will be more acutely affected but I firmly believe most children will bounce back quickly.

Or.....the children were always on a slower side and parents only noticed that now, when having them around for 24/7?

Nothing is ever either black or white and looking for escape goat is a typical human behaviour smh

YES! I feel like they would struggle with understanding interactions from other people
