This news article, about 9 lottery winners, wanted to give something back and raise awareness of the 2 Minute Foundation which receives funding from the National Lottery, which encourages people to complete simple acts to clean up the planet.
That's has been a big increase in the amount of plastics being left on UK beaches
Isn't the local authority responsible for this? I'm all for keeping places tidy, but while people are clearing up after others, they won't employ anyone to do it.
craftyclaws04 This is a very limited way of thinking. It's like I say I'm going to lead an unhealthy life because we have the NHS for free. If people are littering the beaches, it's a sign that they don't really care and don't know how to live in society, no matter how many people the Council will hire to clean.
And most important of all, you, me, and everyone else will be paying for all the extra people that will be hired to clean, and then everyone will be complaining that the Council is not investing resources in other areas, just as we will be complaining when the Council raises its taxes to be able to pay for something every citizen should be doing.
bzortead you are so right. We have to regard society's problems as our problems not someone else's. I would go even further and expect folk to keep the area outside their homes clean and tidy too, helping infirm and disabled neighbours too!
Spending less time on the couch viewing tv and on our gadgets but instead getting involved in community projects would be good for our health and well being. As far as I am concerned there are many better uses for our council tax than expecting others to clean up after us.
bzortead I don't see my council picking up any litter, apart from the usual bin collections. Other's in my area have also said the same, so it does make you wonder where the money allocated for this is being spent.
craftyclaws04 The money for picking up litter shouldn't come from those of us who pay council tax, much better in my opinion, if it came from the fines imposed on those who drop the litter. If they couldn't afford to pay the fines they could choose the alternative of picking up litter for a few days.
The excess money from the fines could pay for the "redundant paid litter pickers" to supervise them.
davidstockport I agree ... sort of 'let the punishment fit the crime' It might just drive home to them the point of not dropping litter in the future! It could be a general environmental task encompassing collecting dumped dog poop bags, graffiti cleaning and repairs etc.
I'm all for people not discarding their rubbish everywhere, but I'm not sure why getting Lottery winners for a publicity stunt is going to endear people to the cause. If they are doing this every week, then great. But, as lottery winners their carbon footprint will likely have increased, they will probably be purchasing more goods and producing more waste - including more single use plastic.
I litter pick most days for my daughter and her pub garden and her car park. People can be so disgusting.
Everyone is responsible to keep there area clear . There is for instance countless litter groups on facebook where they clean the areas they live in ,work in and areas they visit in .Councils do have a responsibility but people do as well . If you take a pride in what you have in front of your own 2 eyes then you will say well done to anyone who does what they know is the right thing to do .
