What do you cook to keep the costs down where possible?

Tonight we are having homemade pizza and Iv just got out ox cheek from my freezer to go in the slow cooker tomorrow.

My cheap favourite is homemade pasta carbonara. And all the family like it which is rare. We also all like fry ups and roast dinners. We all like pizza but my daughter likes just cheese, i like bbq chicken but my husband likes meat feast so it doesn't work out that cheap doing all different ones anyway 😂

Yum I love a fry up on a Sunday morning. As my husband is working away I find a roast a lot of hassle but like one when my mum comes over!

Instead of jars of pasta sauce passata instead. Costs about 50p and you can add the spices and herbs you want for the flavour. Much cheaper alternative. Image

MumOfThree I can't tolerate garlic or onions anymore sadly so what I do is grow basil and add some fresh cropped up basil and some black and white pepper and mix that in with pasta . It's really tasty.

MumOfThree I can grow basil that's fine but other herbs have proved tricky. My rosemary is alive but it never gets any bigger. The parsley is still going after several years which it shouldn't because it is annual.

I make my own tomato sauce for spaghetti and lasagne rather than buying it. I buy the cheapest pasta too. I buy frozen mince as it is cheaper, same with frozen chicken. We make lasagne, cottage pie, spaghetti, curry, chicken and broccoli pasta bake, chicken pie.

I find cutting down on meat really helps if we need to keep the food shop costs down (I’m not trying to convince anyone to go vegetarian btw I do eat meat) but pasta bake, chickpea curry & spicy bean wraps are some good low cost recipes 😊

MumOfThree oh bless her! I’m afraid I don’t as I’m probably in the minority here but i don’t do the cooking in my house! I have seen him make it a few times though and its basically Onions, couple of tins of tomatoes, all your spices, chickpeas & spinach Xx

chilli con carne is always a great option , my house loves it , i normally make a massive batch and freeze it to reheat some other time , its great as a stand alone meal with rice and chips , or nice to put on hodogs as a treat 🙂
