In the News

What is going on in this world ? It’s such a scary place these days. There’s something everyday it seems. So sad.

Yes, it is very sad and I can only image the people who commit these atrocities are mentally ill, in a way that manifests itself in evil actions. I have never been to NZ but have always thought it to be one of the nicest and most trouble free places on earth.........It seems nowhere is immune from hate and violence.

Really makes me worry about my children and grandchildren’s future. Violence all over the world seems to be on the increase. My heart goes out to the innocent victims and their families. Just awful.

LittleLisaMarie yes, I do agree with you totally, I only said that because I cannot understand how anyone with a normal balanced mind can even think of such a thing. I too believe in pure evil because I have a faith and if you believe in God (whatever your faith) it follows that there must be an influence for evil too, whatever name you give it.

But also mental illness can make a person do evil, there are horrendous stories of schizophrenic people committing awful violent crimes.

Lynibis I know you probably didn't mean anything bad by it and i agree, sometimes that is the case unfortunately 😔..

I just feel like it's always the first thing people think of when tragedies like this happen..

I've read hundreds of comments this morning pointing the finger towards mental illness (obviously because the most sane people would never go out and commit such a terrible thing)

But If you have a read through the manifesto, you will see that the actions of this man have nothing to do with mental health.. he's just a plain twisted individual!

What he pulled was a very sick, thought out and planned attack.

Whilst I'm sure the OP means no harm, the shooter wants his manifesto to reach a wide audience online. It’s the kind of document instigators of mass violence often write to inspire copycat attackers. I think it is inappropriate for LD to provide a link to it, and suggest the link above is removed.

Johnny the link don't work anymore, the document was removed sometime yesterday afternoon.. I only put it on for the in-depth apparent reason for his actions.. to show it had nothing to do with mental health. But yes, I agree. I shouldn't have put a direct link on here. I was just annoyed that people always presume it's mental illness for a twisted individuals actions.

Unfortunately because a group of people are deemed to be a certain race/religion that has caused catastrophic events elsewhere and one individual deems this enough to punish them makes me sick and angry at the same time. Im sorry but labelling them mentally ill is unjust. They fully knew what they were doing. Lets not relax the actions by labelling them this way. The victims and families are the ones we should be labelling as innocent

You know if you rob a bank, due to your nature they'll let you keep the money.

Also muslim person commits terror means they are radicalised

But white person doing it means they are mentally ill.

Give me a break its offending me. We are 1 race and we have cancer cells between us that need eradicating... end of

Who knows what causes evil people to do such evil things ? I really don’t think it’s down to mental illness at all. It’s down to being evil pure and simple. That’s what I think anyway.

The vast majority of violent crimes and homicides are committed by people who do not have mental health problems – over 90%. In fact people with severe mental illnesses are more likely to be victims, rather than perpetrators, of violent crime.

What is more common, is for the people committing violent crimes and homicides to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol (about 30%).

I am sure no offence was intended by the LD member suggesting mental illness as a possible cause for the NZ tragedy, and I am certain they meant absolutely no harm.

It’s very easy to make a mistake and say something online that comes out the wrong way and accidentally offends. If the same thing was said face-to-face it would usually get cleared up in a few seconds, and we would all move on. None of us are perfect.

So I guess what I'm saying JoJo is don't take any offence - I think it was simply an unfortunate choice of words - with unintended consequences - coming from someone with a good heart.
