Maternity Boxes

In the News

Just read about an interesting custom in Finland .I think it's a really good idea:To give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life, the country has celebrated a decades-long tradition of receiving a maternity box by the government. Contents of the box include everything from a "light hooded suit and knitted overalls," to bra pads, condoms and, of course, bedding that includes a mattress. The mattress is located at the bottom of the box, which mums then turn into a crib for a brief period of time.

Excellent idea M, but i think the condoms are a bit of an underhand way of trying to tell them to restrain themselves and not overpopulate

we have had these in Scotland for a few years now. All expecting mums get one before they give birth.

We have had these in Scotland for a few years now. I got one just before my son was born. We used everything in the box and my son slept in the box until he grew out of it and then the mattress was put in the dogs bed!

heatherduthie I still have the thermometer and the giraffe comforter and when my son had grown out of the other items I passed them on for free. Our son loved his baby box, was sad when he grew out of it.

heatherduthie they were introduced just before I got pregnant with my son, who will be 3 soon, so your grandson must have just missed out. Aww that's really sweet 😊

MelissaLee1963 it's brilliant for all expectant mums, as there will be things inside it that you wouldn't necessarily think to get, plus it means you can put money towards other items that are needed

MrsCraig yes that’s right. They came out just after my grandson was born. I was surprised at how much things were in them. They are definitely a great gift to get especially for mums who don’t have much money. Baby items are so expensive and some people don’t have family to help out

heatherduthie it is insane how expensive some baby items are! I was surprised at how much was in them too. It is brilliant for mums who don't have much money or have family or friends who can hand down items. We were so grateful for our baby box.
