Member to Member Chats

Ask a Question

Hi. Still new here. Just wondered if there is a way to chat directly to another member. I’ve had a few instances where I’d like to talk more to another member but didn’t want to subject everyone else to the chain of replies etc. The community feels nice here and it would be great to grown my circle of contacts/friends.

At the moment they don't have this function but there are a few of us that would like this option.

MrsCraig I think we had this conversation before and it would be nice to have 'pointless' chats to members we've connected with.

angemski yes you are right, we did have that conversation, I know it had been spoken about before!

There is no private messaging if that is what you mean. All you can do is tag someone and others probably won't bother reading anyway. I notice often that a post has maybe 20 comments, and several say same thing as people only read the OP, reply and not bother with all the other comments.

dawarwick I thought your point was to not subject other people to a chain of replies. Once you branch off a main conversation like I am here, others will not be notified. They can see it though obviously. Is that the problem?

My point is sometimes I might want to discuss something with someone that is not really relevant to the original post. It seems others agree too.

I don't think it matters if conversations branch off, that is what conversations do. My friend and I start chatting and can easily cover 20 topics in a very short time lol!

Thank you for your feedback. We're always open to ideas! This one has been requested a few times, and if enough people show interest we can certainly explore its feasibility some more.

This is a bad idea who to say that person you won't to message is not the person you think he or she is. This is a community site well I thought it was.

Ann1984 I’m not suggesting we break community spirit. I’m actually an advocate of it. I just think it would be nice if one had the option to direct message if one wanted to.

Ann1984 It would be up to the individual to engage with others, if you or I didn't want to message a person we don't, but having the option would be good.

dawarwick it's a good thought. I started a chat on the back of it so people could 'vote' as Tom said above 'if enough people etc'.

I don't think this is a good idea. Can lead to more reports and stuff to deal with. At least in public you have people reporting malicious people or trolls.

Susana I've always been very open and honest on here. I've seen some of the people who didn't like my brutal honesty (about deals by the way) go and slag me off in their own little chat topics. I've seen them making snide comments about other ex-members too. If they were given a platform to do that privately, it would get worse. I fully agree it would just create more work for the mods and owners.

Dennab Fully agree with you there pal. Out in public people have a bit more common sense.

See your point dawarwick but unfortunately if it turns into a 'social media' type comms platform you are bound to have people abusing it i.e. unsolicited messages. Which means more work for the LD team to filter this out.

Lambeth82 I simply wish us to consider a direct message facility. Most of us have no malicious intent. Try to focus on the post aspects please like new friendships rather than the negative. Thank you

Hello everyone, thank you again for all your feedback. It's certainly great to hear members would like to get in touch with each other.

To do this, there are currently two options available for you:

Telegram is a messenger app similar to WhatsApp. It allows for large group chats. We have a Latest Deals chat which currently has over 1,200+ members. It is free to join and is a place many members chat to each other.

Whilst we do not recommend it, it is possible to send a direct message to a member via Telegram. Please only do so if you have their permission. If you have received an unwanted direct message, you can block them.

Please note, the Latest Deals Telegram Group Chat is largely unmoderated as we do not have the resources available to monitor the chat. Please only join and partake with this understanding. You can leave at any time.

Latest Deals has a Facebook Group with 180,000+ members. It is similar to Chat on Latest Deals where people discuss all sorts of things. However, we do not allow private messaging on our Facebook Group.

We do not currently have plans to create our own private messaging system on Latest Deals. You can of course "tag" a user in the comments by typing the '@' symbol followed by their username. For example, "@tom".

We are of course always open to new ideas and happy to look into it if it's something many members would like.
