Mental Health Awareness Week - Best Advice on Self Care?
Ask a Question
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week so I thought it would be a nice opportunity to share our best advice on self care.
Mine would be to make sure you always plan time out for yourself at least a couple of times a week. At least an hour where you can choose to do whatever you want: take a nap, have a bath, read a book, sunbathe. Your body and mind will be grateful!
There is always someone to talk to if you need help. Dont think you need to go through whatever it is alone. Whether its stress about work, life, money or anything there are many people out there to talk to.
A problem shared is a problem halved they say.
Mental health issues and in need of cheering up are two totally different things. Unfortunately self care, although very important, will not stop you having issues.
Unfortunately people will talk about all kinds of stuff but not how they really feel and that is what we need to encourage more of. It has helped with famous people telling their stories and has helped remove the stigma slightly and encouraged some people to open up more, but we have a long way to go. You need to see the signs for yourself and those closest to you, if someone is acting differently to normal, not just in a sad way but also if they are too hyper where normally they aren't, then try and have a chat to them and get them to open up. The same if you notice it within yourself, talk to someone, be it a friend, relative or a stranger, even anonymously, but be aware of the signs.
Mental health issues have severely impacted on my life.... not my own mental health but my sons. I tried absolutely everything to help him. All I can say is mental health IS an illness like a cancer of the mind that steals every beautiful thought.
I totally ageee going through issues myself
I am staring to realise that it is okay not to be to be okay
and tell people this
dont
forget to take care of yourself tho
Look after your body by eating as healthy which will have some impact of your mental health also meditation and yoga may help you.
Self care is about making yourself feel better and looking after yourself, but if you have serious mental health issues, going for a walk is not necessarily going to help you. Mental health is a complex and often misunderstood issue. Your mental health could be impacted on a short term basis due to an event out of your control and once this event is over, your mental health improves. Or it can be something that has an impact on you everyday of your life.
People need to be aware of what signs to look out for. Plus whilst I agree that people need to talk about how they feel, people with depression can find this hard because they don't actually know how they feel or how to describe it, which can make it even worse. I have witnessed mental health issues with a number of loved ones. You need to be there to support them during the good and the bad times.
It is absolutely ok not to be ok and is absolutely vital that we help those who feel this way.
