M&S Selling Other Branded Clothing
Ask a Question
I was browsing the M&S site last night and noticed for the first time they’re selling other branded clothes eg Phase Eight. I know they’ve been selling other cosmetics but when did they start with the clothes?
Maybe they’re hoping to fill a gap in the market since the demise of Debenhams.
How do you feel about this?
Pjran. Yes, they’ve been doing this for a while now. There’s also talk of them moving into some of the vacant Debenhams stores, despite their plan to close 30 M&S stores over the next 10 years. Perhaps they recognise a gap in the market, who knows.
M&S have been struggling with their own fashion line for years. They have been losing a lot of money and are likely looking for different ways to boost sales. They are planning to close an additional 30 stores on top of closures already announced. Although, they are also planning to expand or open 17 stores in better locations, including some former Debenhams shops - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57251682
Normally their own brand goods would be higher margin but I guess they could make money on high price third party brands. Whatever their overheads stay the same so they need to make sure every metre of store space generates income. No point selling third party brands if people won't buy them from M&S because of uncompetitive pricing. I very rarely go into M&S, probably no more than maybe once a year and that's mainly the store at Weymouth as its right next to the seafront and has a decent toilet.
