If Nandos Had to Shut, How Come Your Local Indian is Still Open?

In the News

No kitchens in the UK offer a two metre social distancing rule for workers, says Stephen Baker, professor of molecular microbiology at the University of Cambridge and expert on infectious diseases. “The reason why some of the big corporations have said that they cannot risk the safety of their workers is because it’s not practical,” he says. “Bigger corporations are probably worried about the knock on effects of having an outbreak within their facilities and economically can probably afford to withhold services for the time being given the fact that they are financially solvent. I can imagine that because it hasn’t been mandated by the government that the smaller ones cannot.”

Regardless of which restaurants or takeaways are shut, I'd not touch a takeaway at the moment anyway.

You have no idea who or how many people have handled it.

blacklabrador I'm 100% with you, I wouldn't order a takeaway for the same reason.

Our Indian and Chinese takeaway are still open, but, there is only one chef and one front of house at both places. The kitchen whilst visible is at the back of the room at the correct safe distance from any other person. It's down to luck now the premises are laid out I think.

The virus has a weak fatty membrane making it vulnerable outside a body especially to heat, UV and detergent etc. You are more likely to get it from handling a cold surface than from eating hot food. So when it arrives wipe off the containers with soapy water and then wash your hands. I wonder what is riskier buying cold prepacked food or buying a takeaway, it's hard to know for sure. Bacteria in contrast are often much harder to kill outside the body and can multiply in undercooked food where as the virus can only multiply by infecting you. If the government thought takeaways were a risk I assume they would close them. The smaller the takeaway the less risk I would of thought because it may only be 1 or 2 people in the kitchen.

You can find the hygiene ratings of your local takeaways online.
