Do We Need to Ban More Dangerous Dog Breeds?

A man in Wakefield has died after being bitten by a German Shepherd.
While they're not banned, German Shepherds are often ranked among the most dangerous breeds.
What do you think?
We have a number if attacks where i am. The dog owners are the problem and blame the victims and not take ownership of their digs
I don't think any breeds of dogs should be banned in the first place. We should be banning the unethical and highly dangerous breeding practices of these dogs instead. Often pure breeds are extremely inbred, as people are too keen to breed so called desirable traits, often to the detriment of the dog. I also think people should have a licence aswell to have a dog.
EssexLady I think in theory your idea is good, the problem is it would take so much man power to implement and enforce and there simply isn't the boots on ground and budget to do it. Also agree that people should have a license to own a dog but again it's just not feasible. I used to be against the banning of XL bullies until I saw on the news they are responsible for 50% of all fatal dog attacks. They are simply too dangerous for the general population to be trusted with them.
No we shouldn't doesn't matter how big or small or what breed it is they can attack if the owners can't control the dog they have got it's down to them not the dog
Not imo, I've always said any dog breed can attack regardless of which one it is. For me it's a lack of control from owners especially with the bigger dogs that they have
telmel I wonder if in future it's something they might look at where people must hold a certain licence for owning dogs, I wouldn't be surprised if it was something we see in the future
They should class any dangerous dog licence the same as a gun licence, both in the wrong hands can kill KateGriff169
Years ago, I was told at a dog charity that the breed who committed the most attacks that year were dachshunds - which is believable, as they can be ankle nippers & are often not considered to need training (I guess as they’re small, most attacks don’t get reported or need urgent treatment). So no, I don’t think banning breeds actually does anything - if anything, ban people from owning dogs, particularly those who don’t care for them (which includes training & socialising them). It’s a controversial idea, but perhaps no one should own puppies aside from professionals, who will take on the responsibilities of caring & training at their early stages in life - and maybe only after the dogs are of a certain age/mature, only then can they be sold to new owners
It's not the dogs that need banning it's the owners. They don't know how to deal with the dogs. You have to pass a test to drive, maybe you should have to pass a test to own a dog.
We had German shepherds growing up and I can honestly say, they were brilliant dogs, it's not the dogs fault, it's the owners
Our present dog is a little rescued cross-breed, but we previously kept German Shepherds. Ours were the gentlest, sweetest dogs ever.
My last one, an extremely pretty long haired girl used to frequently come into my elderly persons home and visit the residents. She would sit at their feet and lay her head on peoples laps for a stroke, and at a New Years Eve party at my daughter's house, surrounded by strangers and young children, she was off lead, carefully following me around and avoiding people up dancing. Her best friend was my daughter's Rottie, another sweet and gentle girl.
I don't think that a dog can be judged by their breed. It's the owners responsibility.
No!! It's the owners, not the dogs, German Shepherds are amazing dogs, I know that because I've owned them!!
Maybe it’s about time that the owners had to attend classes with their dogs and register if they pass. If not the dog gets taken away and rehomed to someone responsible.
I think any dog has the potential to be dangerous. A lot of it is down to the owners and how they've brought up their dog. Some people aren't interested in training them or only show them a horrible life so it's no wonder the dog retaliates.
I love German Shephards/Alsations but they can be a bit iffy in temperament although I think females are typically better than males in behavior. What amazes me is the kind or moronic scum that are allowed to keep dogs, people with criminal records etc. I would of thought anyone with a criminal record especially for violent crimes shouldn't be allowed to own a dog, the dog could be mal-treated or just used as a weapon. It's a huge responsibility to look after an animal and if you are criminal scum you clearly have no moral compass. So many stories about dogs attacking others seems to involve people with no or little morality and have previous run-ins with the police.
I would personally put German Shepherds into a class of dog that no one with a violent criminal record can own.
I totally blame the owners and not the dog. Usually these dogs are not trained, well handled or trained to attacked.
Interesting we all are on the same page here on this topic as well. I certainly don't blame the dog but the owners.
tara73ziva totally we walked past a lady with German Shepherds. She literally had them on short leads making sure they didn't go near us til i spoke with her. Think she was worried after the attack that killed a man during the week
Making owners have a licence for their dogs is a step backwards. I remember years ago when we had to have licences for our dogs.
I agree with what most people have said, it's the owners who are to blame for the bad behaviour not the dogs.
