Neighbours, Does Everybody Need Good Neighbours?

I live on a relatively quiet street where under normal circumstances, some neighbours chat and others mind their own business which is fine.
I have one neighbour though who has a voice that is not only piercing but also louder than a fog horn. He never seems to be happy to just get on with his life quietly and as a result, has various power tools and a motorbike to make noise while the rest of us are either working, on furlough or trying to relax. When his children play badminton in the street, I can hardly hear them. When he joins in, it sounds like Sloth from The Goonies playing at the final of Wimbledon.
On the flipside, I have a more immediate neighbour who put a note through our door to check we're ok because he hadn't seen us for a few days. This restores my faith in people when they do something so simple but thoughtful.

As for my neighbours: The guy downstairs is a bit dour, I suspect theres a mutual dislike between us but we are civil when we need to communicate. We have a neighbour a couple doors away who is a serial complainer about EVERYTHING & a busy body whos best avoided. The rest of our neighbours are great.

I am concerned I will be seen as a busy body if I say anything again. It's so tricky dealing with neighbours because you have to see them again! My old neighbour when we lived in a flat dressed in a pilot uniform but we never established whether he was an actual pilot or just a bit weird. That was more of a fascination than a concern. Other floors were actually alright so we were lucky there. The weird thing is we live in a house now and it feels worse.
Dennab I was thinking about the street I grew up on as a youngster. We knew ALL our neighbours by first names & would spend all summer outside all day playing with the other kids on the street, while our parents often had a cuppa together. We didnt just know our neighbours but also knew their friends & family who would visit often. I'm still in touch occasionally with 2 girls from that street I played out with. It's not like that these days at all. Shame!
Glitterandgold I used to go round the corner onto a smaller side road where I did exactly the same. I think it still happens on cresents, closes & other no through routes but children just aren't safe on the terraced streets any more with the minority of fools who drive down them like a racetrack.
Can't fault my neighbour. He's a long distance lorry driver and when he is home he's out.
I will never understand loud people. I just can't understand why someone would want to draw so much attention to themselves, all the time. Like those stereotypical American tourists in restaurants or wherever that are always the loudest. People who talk loudly on their phones on public transport and like you say, neighbours who make so much noise they have to be annoying the entire street and beyond (how do they not know?!).
MeestairChrees I don't think they have any self awareness. The thing is in his case though, I told his children very politely to stop being noisy outside my window the other day. They showed the same respect in return and passed the message to him. What amazes me is he then continued to be noisy. I believe that changed from lack of awareness to defiance. It's such a pity because the vast majority of my street, despite not knowing them that well come across as a respectable and friendly bunch.
Dennab unrelated, but you've just reminded me of something I overheard on a walk the other day. A man walking with his kids and he dropped some rubbish on the floor. One of his kids told him that was wrong and not to litter. He said there wasn't a bin, but the kid said it's still wrong, and pointed to a nearby bin, so he went to throw it in there. At least (some) kids are setting good examples and hopefully it's something we'll see more of in future.
MeestairChrees I see the connection there. Isn't it great that some children are now teaching their parents how to be an adult? What a bizarre society we have.
Dennab definitely. Was happy to see it though - can't understand why anyone would litter, and at least this kids are learning good habits away from the bad parenting.
My neighbours are the worst, since lockdown I haven't had a full night sleep or anything close. They love to blast music and watch movies on loud volume. So sick and tired of them, dont understand how people can be soo inconsiderate.
Because they were not brought up to show respect or consideration for others, as their parents probably weren't either. And I feel there are far too many precious darlings being raised today who think they are the centre of the universe and only their needs and desires are important.
We live in a quiet street. We all keep ourselves to ourselves but will talk to each other when we see each other. The only time anything loud has happened on our street was when a neighbours dog attacked another dog and the owner came and screamed at our neighbour and there was a slanging match in her front garden, that was about 2 years go.
We get on well with our neighbours and we look out for each other.
Mine aren’t pleasant.
One screams and argues daily while breaking things and blasting loud music anytime up to 2am, the others are almost as bad too.
Shame, would love some nice ones.
