Netflix, Will Not Be Watching Anymore.
Other
I don't actually subscribe to Netflix but have had it for a while because family members often buy me a Netflix gift voucher for birthday or Christmas. However, I have asked that they no longer do this for a couple of reasons. First of all the price has gone up by a third and, I could be wrong, but recently the ads seem to be more often and longer.
I have enjoyed many series and films but I do need subtitles on most of the time because although my hearing is ok I often cannot make out dialogue, lots of mumbling etc.
There seems to be a trend nowadays for actual songs to be playing instead of just quiet background music which is driving me crackers as they include the lyrics on the subtitles when they have absolutely no relevance to the plot. They also put subtitles up for things that even if you were deaf would be unnecessary like 'waves rolling up the beach' when you can see them doing so.
So goodbye woke Netflix, get your act together and I might come back!
Lol I use subtitles too well mostly coz my kids are always making noises around me so I can't hear it I'm lucky my netflix is within my sky subscription because I wouldn't pay for it myself, my dad loves it tho
My mum has an all inclusive Netflix subscription for the year so I watch it at her house.I pay for Prime but the TV programmes are not nearly so good as Netflix .Your children will probably renew your subscription anyway lol.
MelissaLee1 I think mine is due to end in November but due to the price hike I expect it to go any time now. However I have just binged East of Eden which is one of the best I have seen on there so far. The psychology of the characters moulded by their experiences was so well acted out, I now want to read the book.
Lynibis I am watching Taboo with Tom Hardy and Steve Graham. Its very enjoyable.A hit on the East India company with a little bit of witchcraft thrown in.
My goodness not being able to hear the dialogue over the deafeningly loud 'background music', which is so loud it could wake the dead! I often have the subtitles on as I can't hear the mumbled audio. I get fed up with having to turn the volume down when the music starts blasting (and often it goes on and on for almost a whole track), then having to turn it back up when the talking starts. Some have suggested online this might help with the volume issue, but I found it didn't make any difference:
Change Audio While Watching a Show
- Pause your video or display the playback controls.
- Navigate to the bottom or top of the screen to open the Audio and Subtitles (speech bubble) menu.
- Select your preferred language or switch from 5.1 surround sound to a standard stereo track (e.g., change "English [Original] (5.1)" to "English [Original]") if background music drowns out voices on a standard TV
This is what all these steaming services do, start off reasonably price and then every few years they put it up, so it’s stops being good value. I never really found Netflix all that good to be honest. There would be a few things that were good and worth watching, but most of the stuff on there is not great. I used to spend 20mins trying to find something to watch and then end up disappointed.
I completely agree with about adverts and subtitles but this is all the subscription tv now not just Netflix. Prices keep going up. They want you to go ad free and pay more. We have subtitles on a lot because a lot of dialogue is mumbled. Don’t know why, never used to be. I think the American programmes are worse for this.
I find that there are certain programs that need subtitles as well and not only on Netflix, something that I wouldn't have needed to do years ago and I don't think that my hearing is failing with age.
Incidentally, our granddaughter who has ADHD finds that subtitles help her concentrate on dialogue. Talking over background noise overloads her concentration, so thank goodness we have the option.
I've never used netflix not even a free trial and I don't like these regular vampire payments which can be so damaging to household income by the fact they take money over such a long time. People just forget about the payments even if they are not really using the service that much because they are small. It's £14 a month now if you don't want ads and personally I could never accept ads. Over 10 years that is about £1700. Of course many people have multiple small payments per month and over 10 years it can be an absolutely huge amount combined.
The average debt per household now is getting towards £20k not including mortgages. However that is the average and a huge number of people don't have long term debt so the real amount is much higher. That is a huge amount of debt to service but obviously does include cars if normal loans, PCH, PCP etc. About 1 in 400 people go through bankruptcy per year and owe on average around £40,000 or just under. So most of their debts are wiped out except if related to the government in anyway, student loans, courts, TV licence etc but all these vampire payments which typically seem to be included with people who spend recklessly are wiped out and the burden of that debt goes to the company who has to increase prices for everyone else to compensate. Of course many people are clever about bankruptcy so they pay their government related debts but allow their other debts to build up. They work the system and get everyone else to pay for their debts. These services are ideal for bankruptcy as there is no asset to reclaim like a car, a TV or house etc. They combine well with holidays, house rent, PCH etc where there is nothing to take back. Yes you lose access to the car with PCH but you never owned it anyway. Also you can often pay government debt with credit cards and that will be wiped out with bankruptcy if its earlier but you can't do that close to bankruptcy as it would be seen as fraudulent borrowing. I should add I only know this because I used to work as a debt collector many years ago and many debtors were incredibly clever but morally vile at passing on their lifestyle costs to other people.
The clever way to use Netflix is to just subscribe perhaps for one month every 3 months so you can watch the shows you like one month and then have two months without it. This is especially true if you have multiple services you use like disney plus etc and you can just have one service per month and just stagger how you watch each service. You still get to see all their content but they get 1/3rd of the money if 3 services. Also sharing netflix is possible so the 4 feeds of netflix are seen in the same location even if they are not, using a VPN etc but that gets complicated.
Not had Netflix in years. I binned off most streaming services. We watch a lot of YouTube these days. You can get whole films and TV shows on YouTube so prefer that as well as podcasts, interviews and watch all sorts of people going travelling etc. We watch a couple that live in a van and narrow boat which is pretty cool .
Jerseydrew for several years I got rid all paid for TV. I didn't miss it at first and watched YouTube instead. I found YouTube went off the boil for me, so I got Netflix. Not sure it's worth it as there's not much I watch on it.
Sherrifffroggy that's why we binned it off. Didn't watch much on it so it wasn't worth it for us
You need to go into your settings and turn off descriptive. If you don’t need that it will stop ’waves rolling’ etc.
Pjran I find spiders creepy but also fascinating. Even the Patu Digua spider which is a creature on the macroscopic and microscopic divide pretty much as its young are microscopic and the adult can't really be seen with the naked eye as its only 1/3rd of a millimetre long has 6 eyes. That is the world's smallest spider but of course being in the macroscopic/microscopic world means there could well be smaller spiders in there. You would need 1.14 billion of these spiders to equal the weight of a average human being.
Humans have identified only about 0.001% to 0.0001% of Earth's estimated microscopic lifeform species, meaning that 99.999% or more remain completely undiscovered.
Here's a Patu Digua with a top hat. Not sure why they added the top hat to it on the image.

That’s what they do these days with streaming services they start out with good reasonable prices if you are new customers then within a year they then charge more and even more money each year!!
I think with the paramount acquisition of Warner Bros they will have more debt to service and have a stronger position in the market to push up prices so I can see such services increasing in price. They haven't got a monopoly though but still they now have a greater burden of debt to service so will be looking to increase revenue and reduce costs. I've never given a penny to any of these services and happy to continue that way.
Don't forget if you like retro tv there is a lot of stuff on youtube and you can also watch a lot of stuff at the internet archive. This tends to be last century stuff but I quite like some nostalgia tv occasionally.
