New Bathroom What a Nightmare
Other
When it was all ripped out i seriously thought 'what have i started' as my brain just could not imagine the finished result. So many problems have come to light but the guys have overcome every one and i am feeling more positive now. Still a shell at the moment but hopefully not too long now.
I dread to think how stressful it is for folk who have extensions or house refits done. Have you had good or bad experiences?
I will be tackling a new kitchen when the weather starts to warm up, it's a massive job, I wanted to do last year but wasn't feeling up to it, wife's been nagging me so I haven't got much choice lol
martinlufc5637 must be lovely to have a partner to do all these things for you lol. I have to pay. But to be honest oldest son is great at D.I.Y. and does all the smaller jobs for me. I need a couple of windows replaced next.
We had ours done about 3 years ago. It was a simple process for us. Guys came in the morning and was done by the evening, although ours wasn't a whole refurbishment.
MrsCraig with thought to getting older I am having bath removed and walk in shower installed. New loo and sink, rather than retiling having wall panels, new flooring etc. There have been lots of problems, one being a wooden box which none of us realised was built over a sloping wall/floor which was part of the ceiling above the stairs. Duh.
Have decided to rebox it so I can use as a seat and have a bit of storage under a hinged lid.
Personally I’ve had good experiences with builders but i have had friends who have had some really bad situations. So much stress.
jms19 yes it must be super stressful if they are not good builders. I have known my plumber for years and he is more than reasonably priced, in fact one time he took tomato plants for a small job as he adamantly refused to take my money. The builder is his friend and of same character and they work together when both of their services are needed.
We had our bath taken out December 2023 and replace with shower tray and side panel, all done in a couple of days, only thing I don't like is the tray (landlords choice) as it is very flat and we've had to put a 'lip' along the edge as the water ran off. Walls had panels put on them in the shower area. WC and basin stayed as they were.
lilyflower they actually had to build a false wall in order to bring it forward to get around this awful sloping bit. I will try to attach a pic as they both said never seen anything like it. Can't be cut away as the other side is the ceiling above the stairs.
Lynibis What a nightmare, what was hiding that before? At least ours was a pretty straightforward swop.
lilyflower it was boxed over with a lift up hinged lid but you could still use as storage though inside was sloping. We've had all sorts of ideas, shelving etc but have decided to box it in again as it makes a handy seat while I dry my feet lol.
Lynibis its a good idea to box it in. Somewhere for you to sit and an extra bit of storage too. You could go really funky with the paint job and make a real feature of it !
lilyflower it was boxed in before with lift up hinge. However, I was too thick to point it out and they didn't lift lid to look inside so it was a bit of a shock for them. Will now be boxed again as a seat but smaller this time so it looks more spacious in the room.
suevernon1968 I am not very artistic and I think they may cover it with the wall panels so it blends in, they are a nice marble effect. So looking forward to it being finished
Had a nightmare with B&Q fitting our bathroom, an absolute show.
Please never ever use them.
TheChimp a guy I worked with had a new kitchen bought and fitted by them and he had to keep calling them back for loads of quite serious errors. It took best part of 3 years to sort and his wife was pulling her hair out. We have one within walking distance from me so will get the towel rail, toilet roll holder etc but that's all.
My husband ripped our bathroom and separate toilet and knocked down the adjoining wall twenty years ago. I can not remember how we coped with four children!
eyeballkerry ha ha probably a memory that was pushed to the back of your mind, hope he did a good job!
Lynibis He did a very job but since then we have replaced the bath with a shower and then changed back to a bath.
I had a ‘granny flat’ extension built which wasn’t a problem as we could just shut the door on it.
I am having my bathroom turned into a wetroom which is making me nervous. I am disabled so I have to have it done but the only thing that keeps running through my mind is where will I wee until its done !!
suevernon1968 without too much detail they attach the loo each night but not plumbed in and I have to flush with buckets of water which they kindly carry upstairs for me. It isn't too bad. My main concern is having to strip wash at the kitchen sink before they arrive each morning
Word of warning, don't get a black granite shower base , big mistake, it looks nice new but shows up all the soap stains , stick to white, so much easier to clean
Mine is being put in by a charity - i obviously cried when they told me yes they could do. Had to have it checked for asbestos which it passed thankfully. I only have a bathroom upstairs and the toilet is separate so they are going to knock the wall down in between. My home is an ex council house and it’s built really well. All the interior walls are brick. Even getting a nail in to hang a picture.
I have blinds in my kitchen so that wouldn’t bother me but i may take a washing up bowl into my bedroom to have a wash and my kids are on hair washing duty.
As it’s being done by a charity they choose the builders - I presume its a company they trust. Can you tell this is really playing on my mind lol.
suevernon1968 The charity must use the same builders for all the work they carry out. Some of the workers could be retired, but they like to help out in the community. I'm sure they will do a good job on your bathroom.
I've been putting off fitting a new bathroom for two years. We have decided to rip out the bath, toilet and sink. The work will start in March as we need to buy all the stuff first. It shouldn't take long to fit as we are quite good at diy.
Sugarbabe my builder and plumber went through brochures with me to help me decide what was suitable and much of it was on sale. They also passed on their personal discount so I only paid for what they bought it for. I know 3 people who have had bathrooms fitted recently and prices have been very comparable.
