Is This a New Marketing Ploy?

Other

I recently posted a deal for a 40% off sale. Later I got another email from the company informing me that I had 3 items 'in my basket' and I know with absolute certainty I did not even look through their site, let alone choose the items they showed. They were of no interest to me and were not things I would ever order. Trying to force a sale? Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes! I believe it is. I've also had this email from two well known companies telling me I had items in my basket that they 'didn't want you to lose'. I had only looked at one item on the first site and had looked at three different things on the second site. I had to go back on the first just to check but was well aware that I hadn't put anything in my basket on the other. It really didn't encourage any trust in the sellers. 1984..........

Thank goodness I am not going gaga. I was beginning to doubt my sanity as I copied and pasted a comp a day or two ago (done theirs previously) and it was taken down saying something about not up to standard. I sent an email and got a reply saying it was back up but the comp bears no resemblance to the one I posted when you click enter competition! In other words comp description on first page is different to the comp when you click enter!

Back to subject. You are right, I will not buy from a company that employs these tactics and it lowers them drastically in my esteem.

Lynibis I see it as a form of cold calling. Even scammers use this trick. If these companies manage to get 10% of people to take a second look and then make a purchase they've done well. Tactics stink!

Lynibis I've just seen your comment on another thread but didn't want to hijack someone else's topic. How did the spa day go? Good, bad or just plain ugly? 😁

It was really nice thanks angemski. We had a back and shoulder massage, then a manicure but by the time we finished lunch no time for anything else. My sister had tried to book somewhere halfway for both of us and it was next door to brands hatch. Think I got the better deal travel wise as I am in Essex and she is in Wiltshire! I think we will probably do it again when I stay with her next as I would like to use the steam and sauna. Thanks for asking 😉

Lynibis I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I thought you would. I felt the same way and because it was a booked birthday gift I had to go. It started something that has become a regular visit for me and I love the steam rooms.

Yes and no. It doesn't really work like that unless the website has a cart cookie error. I set up auto emails for abandoned baskets and the only way to trigger them is if a customer gets half way through a check out - that's how a company knows how to email you. Without a check out in progress, they wouldn't know your email address. You can be targeted on social media just by visiting though. Hope that helps.

Well I did get the original email from them, which I used to post the deal on here. But there is no way I would have put those items in the basket......unless I was sleep shopping lol

That's been around. If I looked up something on Zavvi the system would send me an email to make me consider purchasing it.
