Night Time Potty Training

Ask a Question

Does anyone have any tips for night time potty training? We have had some dry nappy pants in the morning, but not consistent.

Want to focus on it, but would love some tried and tested tips to get started!

Thanks 😊

First off a waterproof cover then I used puppy pads from Poundland cheaper then pampers night time pads. Then just put child to bed in big boy/girl undies and praise every morning when dry maybe a reward chart. I never needed anything like what I listed once had dry nappy I just sent to bed in undies but had waterproof covers I have these now still on every bed now to keep mattresses clean

Ann1984 thank you. He has asked a few times recently not to wear his nappy pants, but unfortunately wakes up very wet and annoyed with himself. The puppy pads are a good idea!

We never did anything but wait. Once the night time nappies were consistently dry, we stopped putting them on. I'm sure you're very nearly there with some dry nappies in the morning.

ClaireF1978 thank you! Any ways to encourage him to get up and go to the toilet himself? We lift him before we go to bed, and sometimes he gets up himself.

What age did you notice the consistency? I know everyone is different so just curious 🤔

FG280 it was within weeks of having the odd dry nappy in the morning. We potty trained soon after he turned 2 and he was dry at night a month after he was dry during the day. This varies massively though. You could try putting pants on under the nappy to get the wet sensation without the mess. That was what we would have done if we hadn't seen such quick progress with it.

I was told by many people that until they are dry during the day for a week without any accidents you shouldn't focus on night time as it will be more difficult. No idea if that's true, just what I've been told by numerous friends.

Have waterproof covers, use puppy pads for any accidents, have his potty in his room in case he wants to use it at night, no more juice water etc an hour before bed and always go on the potty before bed.

It just takes time. Praise him when he has a dry nappy in the morning and if he does have an accident make sure he knows that is normal and not to worry about it and that he can try again in a few days.

MrsCraig thanks! He did brilliantly at day time, then 6 months in, had a massive, long lasting regression. Was tough and frustrating all round.

He is doing great during the day now and has been asking about night time, which is a good sign. Just mindful of the day regression, so hoping it is better, especially for him 💙

FG280 regression is completely normal, they can go for ages being dry and then one day have an accident, its really common.

I'm struggling to get my son to even use his potty at all! He will happily sit on it but he doesn't do anything! It's a long process, it just takes patience and perseverance.

It's a really good sign he is asking about night time.

Another vote for the puppy pads. I waited until they had consistently dry nappies on waking, before we used pants. I didn’t use nappy pants as they treated them as nappies! Put a potty in their room, incase they need to go and a night light nearby!

I have three kids. Hence the they/their, it’s not a non binary thing. Just incase anyone was wondering!

I was lucky I had no wet beds when my son was potty training I did not use any pull-ups i just put underwear on him and for bed I just put his pjs on but I did use waterproof mattress protector and a waterproof quilt protector just incase good luck not every child is the same but am sure they will cotton on quick
