There's No Food Shortages Apparently?

I keep hearing that there are no shortages, but when I try to do online shop there is a fair amount out of stock and even more unavailable when it arrives.
Same when I once got a delivery most was missing, when I browse the stores online most is out of stock!
Can’t do in store due to disability
A simple solution is to shop in person but maybe that is not possible for you. Pretty much everything was in stock when I went to the supermarket a few weeks ago. The only empty shelves were in the soap section with people going mad buying too much of it at once. The advantage of going in person is being able to see what the alternatives are if anything is out of stock though.
That isnt possible for me. I do prefer shopping in person so I can choose exactly what I want but that will have to wait
Where I am is there now appears to be a sugar shortage, none to be got in the town.
There isn't and never has been any food shortages !
Its always been a distribution problem brought about by the sad intellectually challenged hoarders .
Plenty of stock in our local supermarkets but you may have to queue to get in for 5 -15mins at busy times . Too long away from the gaming console for the snowflake generation sadly so they swamp the on line delivery systems who have not yet got enough drivers to keep up with demand (although they are trying ,they say ).
Sorry , it sickens me , most of our population are going above and beyond to help the elderly and vulnerable yet a sizeable minority just have the "I'm all right Jack " mentality.
I think when this is all over, or even now , we should each look at ourselves very carefully and ask if we ever needed those 20 packs of loo rolls , the last 10 packets of Pasta off the shelf etc ,etc .
Why has the demand for on line delivery multiplied threefold since the start of the crisis outstripping the Supermarkets capabilities ? Lazy furloughed non workers ! taking available delivery slots when they have all the time in the world to go to the supermarket or local shop .
Who suffers - the elderly , the vulnerable who cannot get to a shop or have to self isolate and cannot get a delivery because the idle "I'm alright Jack " brigade have them all !
I'm sure it is easier to find what you want in store but a member of my household is one of the people who was told to stay in with rest of household for 12 weeks by NHS. So I have to rely on delivery. Having to home school my kids is taking up a lot if time too
As a housebound disabled person I have to agree with you. Can’t get slots as people who can go on store have gotten them.
Golfforall Well said. I'm still working but from home and as an able bodied young(ish) human being, it's not hard for me to drive down to the local supermarket. Those people you describe are lazy bastards.
Dennab Must admit I never could understand the attraction of Home delivery . I always thought it was the preserve of working couples who used schools as babysitters and despite having 2 cars in the drive haven't the time to shop ?
I did look into it a few weeks back as I live alone and wanted a back up in case I caught the virus and had to self isolate .
No chance ! Don't know what its like now but there were no slots whatsoever in this area at the beginning of April . Don't tell me all the slots were taken up by the self isolating , vulnerable or elderly !
Even though ,as a Key worker , I am at work most days I do not find it a problem to drive 5 miles to the Supermarket queue for 5-15 mins then do my weekly shop .
To the intellectually challenged , it may look a long queue (50 -100 yards ) but , DOH !! , its a supermarket with loads of checkouts ! The 100 yard queue is in effect a slowish stroll . To be honest very pleasant .
The majority of us are social animals and at our most chatty in adversity . May seem strange but when queuing everyone talks to each other - complete strangers, you wouldn't think so !
Wouldn't miss my trip to the supermarket (and I'm a bloke !) - I'm a mug for the end of aisle offers , like to pick my preferred size of baking spuds and mushrooms etc.
You won't get me anywhere near those "speak your weight " checkouts and I always finish my light hearted chat with the checkout operator with a serious "thank you for what you are doing for us " - and I mean it !
Golfforall My Mum managed to get a slot with Asda and one with Iceland. I agree the queue to get in is pleasant enough and people have become more sociable with a newly gained appreciation of the outside world! The only time I used supermarket delivery was around 2010 to take advantage of some massive discounts Tesco were offering for new customers. I did the same with Iceland with something like 40% off my order and they shut down their website shortly after! I didn't even know they had started taking online orders again until this fiasco.
Golfforall i always said i would never do home delivery. I like looking for bargins and choosing the best date least fat ect.
it's more a distribution problem, and from what I have seen in the news, a lot of farmers and producers are actually throwing food away, which is always sad to see. If you have a farm near you, they may be selling to locals directly
