Nostalgia for times without Internet, Smartphones and Instant Gratification

Ask a Question

Does anyone else feels nostalgic to past times? Internet, smartphones etc are great inventions....but. do they make people happier? Somehow I miss simpler times.. now everything is readily available all year round.. it takes away the joy of looking forward to something...the shops selling xmas stuff on since September!!! Soon we wont even take it off...it will be on sale all year round...I dont know it makes me feel like grinch...I look back at my own childhood at excitement of certain things you could only get in December....and now it's all sales and profit..

In January our phone line came down during some bad weather.

It took about 5 days to get telephone/Internet back, and I have to say I loved it.

Got a few books read and actually concentrated on TV programs without picking up the iPhone every 5 minutes.

blacklabrador that's the thing...its just a habit...and lately any app unless you disable it keeps pinging with notifications so you check it thinking it might be important...i disabled all notifications and email too otherwise I spend so much time checking it...Netflix is great but I find I spend so much time actually looking for anything to watch what I havent seen yet 😂

BlueOrchid I know that feeling, if I have time to watch a film on Netflix I have to factor in the 15 minutes it takes to find one I fancy from the massive choice.

BlueOrchid I was just talking about this last week - the excitement of Christmas morning getting a new book, a board game, a packet of sweets. Kids today seem to get far to much and it's all technology, if they play up stick them in front of TV/tablet/phone what happened to playing games/cards/colouring/reading. I know some parents will do, I'm speaking from watching what step-sons girlfriend does - no interaction whatsoever.

lilyflower that's just the thing...I remember when I was a kid kinder eggs were a treat sold on Easter, xmas etc... it was special to get one...now it's in the shops all year round. Yes there are some seasonal treats still but it doesnt count anymore...when stolen bites, xmas pudding and mince pies are on sale since September it doesnt feel special.. I always put xmas decorations up on 1st December sometimes a bit later but only in December. Other people seem to keep it all year or decorate their houses from October...my neighbour's did that last year it was kinda depressing seeing it in their windows for months...

I see parents on public transport staring at their phones instead of interacting with their children and couples on dates looking at their phones and not talking! It’s sad, we are losing the ability to talk to each other.

The positive of the internet for me is the accessibility to information for young people - I remember taking my daughter to the library to find books for projects and if you were late getting there, they would all be gone!

gerrykelly25 even on the dates now its more important to take photos of food, selfies and tell everyone else how great your date is...

It is positive but then again you dont have to work for it, research it anymore... it's all just a click away. And you can easily copy someone else's work straight from internet.. yes the accessibility is great. But that takes away the effort. Teens get addicted to devices... as everything it has pros and cons...

Before Computers:

Memory was something you lost with age,

An application was for employment,

A program was a TV show,

A cursor used profanity,

A keyboard was a piano,

A web was a spider's home,

A virus was the flu,

A CD was a bank account,

A hard drive was a long trip on the road,

A mouse pad was where a mouse lived,

And if you had a 3 inch floppy............you just hoped nobody ever found out!

Do think Internet and smartphones have turned us into a load of zombies.

Mick82 it's like a double edged sword... it can be a great learning tool - if you need to find out the fix to some problem etc it's only a click away or most likely on YouTube 😂... but at the same time...kids now instead of playing with toys rather watch other kids or even adults opening new toys or playing computer games?! With increasing commute times and workload it adds a strain to our mental capacity. And increased choices on everything don't help either. There is a reason why Steve jobs had a wardrobe of identical outfits and didnt allow his own kids to use apple products ....

The good aspects to internet and smartphones outweigh the bad. I wouldn't want to go back to past times. The internet is an amazing tool to help with peoples education and knowledge and without it, how many people would struggle? Loads in my opinion

Getsome oh I know that...I'm not disagreeing that it's got pros too... it's just.. some things get to me. That snapchat etc allows abusers lure in young kids. Bad news spreads in seconds across the world... etc etc. I'm sensitive person and after terrorist attacks and other horrible things it upsets me. I know I dont know them people or their families but to me every human is the same...at same time it has power to do great things but it's a shame it's not as many which spreads as much or as fast
