How Do I Obtain Masks??

Ask a Question

Hi, apologies if this has been asked or discussed before. The one item that still seems difficult to obtain are masks. I have found either they are overpriced, delivery is weeks or they are of poor quality or no longer available. I decided up to now not to order as others may not be able to obtain them who may need them more, however I'm now providing Palliative care and travelling to work (public transport) I feel its advisable to wear a mask, so really could do with some, any ideas anyone?? Any advice will be greatly appreciated x

I got these the other week. The deal was ok. I thought quite thin to start with but actually no thinner than if I made my own. Washable. I'm still getting used to wearing them but they were all right

In France they told people to sew their own masks, even gave the shape and instructions in the newspapers, because there were no masks anywhere. My mum made a few but she's used to sewing. Can you sew? Every household should have been sent masks in every country imo but as it doesn't happen we need to resort to diy...

Theres a free pattern on lovecrafts today too to knit one- can do in cotton type 'wool' so its not itchy..i may do some when ive finished blanket.(in final furlong!) After ive done baby bootees& blankets for kittens/puppies.....so no time soon thenπŸ€”πŸ˜… ...i had a further look at this-the one on email said free pattern,i click on it & its not free, but if you type it in search box for free face mask patterns there IS some others.ive emailed about the other one though its clearly a mistake, unless theres a code for it?

Caz2 I like the idea of cotton type wool, not sure I can knit, well I did once learn but I'm talking basic of basic, as in I only know one type, I remember being taught the second type (pearl) afterwards and oh that never went well! So all in all I could most likely attempt a scarf!

AtiraLumena if you look on lovecrafts the actual free face mask pattern is just plain knitting.πŸ™‚

Did you find any? I found this article on the government website quite interesting for anybody wondering generally about masks:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/public-advised-to-cover-faces-in-enclosed-spaces

They're asking the public not to buy medical grade masks but looking at what I have seen advertised, most of them are not of that type anyway.

Use a bandana or scarf, but use it properly and not like the gent, sorry male item, who removed his in Morrisons queue so he could sneeze! Security did go and speak to him, don't know the outcome as I got into store.

AtiraLumena No, he was well behind me, those around him moved away pretty quickly. He's not the first I've seen, some of the worst are smokers - mask on - mask off quick smoke - mask on - mask off to cough - mask on. The mask is to stop you sneezing/coughing onto people!

Dennab Some have no common sense. Like my daughter said when there was a shortage of loo rolls - you know why Mam?, (no) because the Government has said cough into your elbow or catch it in a tissue and the majority of people don't know the difference between their elbow and a**e

lilyflower it's like everyone with the gloves, spreading germs further than had they not worn them! The first time I felt I could be exposed was in the queue for the pharmacy, then I saw this happen a few times in other places but thought its not like anyone can really just get out of the way as the place in the queue would be lost for several days!

It's actually very easy to make your own, there are a lot of different ways out there but this is my favourite. No sew - use a bandanna or something of similar size (a muslin cloth perhaps) and two elastic bands or hair ties. Plus, you can wash it after each use and therefore you don't have to worry about the cost and availability of buying single-use masks

Caz2 The squares I have are actually 'dribble' catchers and are quite thick. I used to take them on holiday to protect the back of neck/shoulders when we didn't want anything to heavy.

lilyflower oh they'd be great to make mask of then..the thinner plain cotton ones or old thinner face flannels would be good to make linings for any cotton material face masks.

One of my daughter's is a key worker and as there are soo many "patients" in isolation during this pandemic. They are safer in their own homes . My daughter says their workload has doubled and their PPE is almost halved that a lot of the carers have been sourcing their own. I've been making masks for her and am lucky enough to have a friend who makes scrubs. Another friend who has their own cleaning company to provide sealed boiler suits .gloves visors and hand sanitizer . Instead of 8 hour shifts its now 12 hrs. I was a nurse for many years myself and said to her that the caring profession is a vocation not a job for everyone . She has a 2 year old at home who she rarely sees . Be careful though there's a lot of scams with PPE.

Too many companies trying to cash in sadly. I wouldn't wear one but because of the nature of the work I can't take risks on my way there. Yes my shifts are mostly around 12 hours too, my sons shifts are even longer. That's a lovely way to explain care work, I truly agree. I wrote a post about care work or any job that is regarded as suitable, having to come from within x

I use mine as little as possible. The masks won't protect you from a virus.

Besides, it's a stronger version of the flu. Folks ain't wearing masks because of the standard flu, but are doing for the 2.0 version because of all the scaremongering.

I agree but was thinking if it helps reduce the odds or severity regarding the journey it may help. To be honest I wouldn't wear one, it's only really because of the nature of the service I provide

Thank you truly for all these great comments. We have the sanitiser and medical gloves provided by the NHS at work. The masks aren't provided which aren't required anyhow at work itself as not a care home or hosp, it's a private care company and the risks aren't there like those many other care workplaces are exposed to. So generally just for the taxi etc but I've got to be super careful on that journey as cannot expose someone receiving palliative care to the virus. I do not have the virus from what I'm aware but many people are in and out of taxis and not all drivers are cleaning their cabs now and neither are they all wearing masks x
