Oh My Days! How Horrible is Quorn?
Ask a Question
I used used some Quorn 'mince' to make a chilli and it is absolutely disgusting! It's going straight in the bin
Please could any vegetarians tell me how they can eat it? Is it an acquired taste?
It is definitely an acquired taste! I can only eat it of in a meal with lots of herbs and spices.
TheChimp It really is. I don't tend to use it much anymore. I tried it as a substitute when on a diet once and hated it. I think these days there are far more options available to vegetarians
Quorn is foul! When I was a vegetarian many years ago, it was practically the only veggie brand option available in the supermarkets, and I tried it once and never again! It doesn’t taste like it’s good for you at all
Iv tried making a bolognese with it on more than one occasion when it's been on offer. Each time hoping it'll be better. Its rank!
Has anyone tried tofu? Is that any good?
I've been told that it's very difficult to get any flavour into it.
There's not a lot of vegetarian food that I like to be honest.
I think that I might have liver, bacon and onion gravy tonight
TheChimp I’ve recently got into loving tofu! The best way to get flavour into it is to use firm tofu and crumble it into tiny pieces in a frying pan and then fry until it’s golden brown and a bit crispy, about 10 mins. Then you can season with soy sauce or whatever you like and everything gets coated. Throw it into bolognese or chilli and treat it like mince. Or I normally go Asian and have it with noodles. Recently become obsessed with Korean chilli paste
Try tossing the quorn first in some melted butter or olive oil with a some herbs/spices, (eg paprika) and then fry or grill the quorn before adding it to your dish towards the end - or even right at the end - of cooking.
This really helps with the texture issue, although I must admit it works better with the quorn chunks/cubes rather than the mince.
Am not a vegetarian myself - just always been very veggie friendly - but am increasingly moving over to a more veggie diet - not so much because I mind eating animals, but more because of the health/environmental aspects. Also (is it just me or has anyone else noticed this) I've really been going off chicken lately as is often seems to have a really strange texture to the flesh these days and doesn't have much taste.
I don't like Quorn either. I generally don't like vegetarian/vegan food that tries to mimic the taste of meat or fish.
I have Quorn mince but prefer the Tesco veggie mince, the Quorn sausages ,pasties and gammon are all good and the Quorn nuggets are just as good as real. Tofu is awful though.
It really has put me off trying other meat substitutes.
If I want something vegetarian, I think I'll stick to a Greggs cheese and onion bake.
I have tried the Quorb ‘chicken’ and would agree it didn’t taste very nice, I would imagine it is was soggy cardboard tastes like!
Are you a vegetarian or was you just trying it?
AliceBell64468 I was just trying it for a change. What a big mistake that was.
The wife ate the Quorn chilli with some nachos. She must be off her nut or her taste buds have gone.
TheChimp ah okay, yeah I much prefer the real thing
Lol perhaps the other tastes in the chilli help cover the fact of not being able to taste the meat! I don’t know I only eat bland stuff haha.
Its awful! My sister is a vegetarian so my Mum used to buy quorn mince and inflict it on the meat eaters.
I like a lot of quorn stuff even their mince. I think for a typical chilli I would soak the mince in vegetable stock with various flavourings added to ensure a good taste and would be careful not to over power the chilli with the mince. I would use 2 types of beans, mushrooms and onions to create a nice flavour. I bought some organic soya mince and find you can make great chilli's with that too perhaps slightly nicer than Quorn. If I'm using normal meat like beef or turkey mince the chilli is almost impossible to go wrong but with these meat alternatives you have to fart about more to ensure they taste nice.
I love it, I preferred it to real mince even before I was vegetarian and my non-vegetarian family prefer it too, it's also a lot healthier. What you don't like some others do. Also, all quorn products are not the same, for example I'm not that keen on their chicken style pieces but love their fillets, quorn roast, nuggets etc.
From a non vegetarian - I must be a minority as I actually like it, though I also like meat mince too as long as it's the lean less than 5% fat stuff.
Quorn chicken nuggets are amazing!! I’m a meat eater and I’d take them over real chicken ones any day. The batter they use tasted exactly the same as chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s.
hanwhite yes I agree the nuggets are great! We got the Southern Fried Bites as a substitution and tried them last night and they’re pretty tasty too.
I quite like their "chicken" stuff by agree the mince isn't the best. If you're seriously looking for an alternative mince Holland and barret do a soya protein mince which is nice you just flavour it yourself
Ellexpayne I have experienced some awful stomach cramps with some quorn products, I think it was the sausages. Not sure what the different ingredients are in those as I’m fine with the nuggets.
snoogans888 they put mciroprotine in it and that’s quite common to be allergic to. They have a warning on the packet of some of their food .
Ellexpayne I saw that but I don’t understand why I’m ok with some of their products and not others
McCartney burgers are excellent if you fancy something vegetarian that actually tastes alright.
The wife tried some of the mozzarella burgers and she wasn't impressed.
What I do like are Mexican spicy bean burgers.
We tried it in Bolognese sauce once, never again. It's too fibrous. It's got a very strange feel in the mouth, I don't remember it tasting funny just odd feeling.
I can not stand Quorn too....once I tried to make bolognese and all the tomato sauce disappeared, it got into the meat and the whole thing was tasteless...same with the nuggets...they just taste so unnatural...like a plastic slice.
Haha- i bought some quorn mince in a bid to 'eat healthily' but each time i suggested it i was met with less enthusiasm than if id offered a worm pie,- i then offered it to my son to give his friend at uni who is a vegetarian- even he turned it down!
Haha I actually prefer it to "normal" mince myself. Maybe i just got used to it down the years. Im not a Vegetarian either. Well not anymore. Gravy, mince and mash spud, fried onion. Or in a lasagna would be my pref.
I know a lot of non-vegetarians who prefer and always use Quorn rather than "regular" meat mince! I personally prefer it
Tend to agree that it's not great. But try Quorn nuggets - I really can't tell the difference and happily eat those.
Oddly, even though you'd think they'd be the same but just bigger, their larger fillets aren't great.
I love their nuggets! Try different fillets etc, I've tried a lot of their different products and about 80% I love! They have a good range
Hi TheChimp the title of your thread made me smile. I agree quorn mince isn't great lol Will have to give the nuggets a try.
I have tried all the Quorn products thinking that I picked the wrong one and they are all like talking to yourself.Linda Mcartney's products are good though.Still I'm a butcher's daughter so it's difficult lol.
I think it’s an acquired taste, personally I love the pieces ! I’ve always loved the pieces and it depends how you make them I think
I tried this a while back and thought the same as you, not nice, but maybe with the right recipe it works. Also tried jackfruit and that was bad.
