Ask a Question

🗣️ Is it OK to leave furniture outside for neighbours?

A single mum was fined £500 after being accused of fly-tipping a cabinet she intended to give away.

People leave things out but definitely best put not in, mind you so many tea leaves these days they anything even if they aren’t to give away.

It needs to made clear that the item is ‘free’ to anyone passing. In Australia they have a special day people can put stuff outside their property but must fit a certain size square outside their house. This makes sense, if it doesn’t go that day then the owner should remove and dispose off another way.

She left it on the public pavement. Otherwise if it was in her own garden/driveway/property with free notice, they couldn’t fined her.

Somebody moaned I suppose with nothing better to do but she should of put It on her front path behind the gate then no one could of said or done anything about It. With a note on It of course. Lesson learned.

I think if it's left outside and no one takes it within a set period of time the owner should then have to dispose of it properly. I'm all for reusing of items but I've seen people leave stuff outside that no one would want in a million years.

When I saw the title of this thread I assumed someone was asking about garden furniture not getting rid of rubbish 😂

If it’s an item that is being collected it’s fine in my mind. But if you are leaving it out in the hope someone will take it, it could be a nuisance and an eyesore

She should have puy a sign up as it does look dumped. Though I've left things outside mine if someone is collecting it. Same as I've collected things from people's houses after work. Usually things for work. I work in education so use random stuff for playtime

Can't see why not.

Maybe in the garden so you don't get fined for fly tipping

Lot's of people leave things out for free around us, usually just attach a sheet of paper saying please help yourself.

In my area you only do that if you want someone to take it - it’ll be taken before anyone from the council will notice

No, that's dumping garbage. People are somehow getting more accostumed to doing it and feel fine about it.

I doubt with Starmer's Administration they'll actually fine too many people for it considering he's allowing prisoners to be released early. What a wonderful leader Starmer is.

I think it would probably be better to take a quick photo and post it on a local group or on Facebook marketplace. It's a bit more effort but I find things are gone within minutes when they're listed as free.

I've always left stuff at the end of my garden. Some people might go past and take them and then if not after a few days we just take it to the tip
