Old Fashioned Parents

Ask a Question

My fiancé's parents are very old fashioned in the way they think an man is the one to have the full time job and the women should cook they actually asked me the other day who does most of the cooking and cleaning my reply was " depends who is at work " if my partner is at work i will and if im working he will its how we work i just wondered what everyone's views on it as they assumed my answer would be just me 🙈🙈

What do you think of this?

Not unknown to get comments like this. From your photo your fiance's parents can't be that old and usually you sort of expect it from much older people. I think it is possible mum sort of did most for her son and expects somebody to take over. I am 61 but was a mature student and started my first year at University in 1993 doing a biology degree. My nan who was born in 1919 said one day to me "...hear you are at College, is it home economics you are doing..". She never in a million years saw a female going to University. She is no longer with us and passed away while I was at University but I wonder what she would think that her grand-daughter went onto to get a degree, a MA too as well as a Diploma? She would think I was odd and surely I would have enjoyed being tied to a kitchen sink for ever! God Bless her.

Thanks for your comment and its really odd they assumed it as they dont expect me to take over like she did as her son is very independent and we both dont rely on anyone really but his younger brother is 100 different his 15 and cant even make his own lunch lol i think i might of read into it too mich and they was generally curious of how we are together

In our house it is very much 50/50. I look after our son so my husband does most of the cooking and cleaning. They maybe think that it is traditional and it is what works for them so wondered if you did it too.

In our house we both cook and clean. Although i usually do more of the cooking and my wife does most if the cleaning when im in work. We are both women though. A lot of my friends complain about their bfs & husbands not doing much around the house 🤣

My grandad thinks the same my nan did everything for him until she died. But I grew up in a home where my dad did most of the household chores so I think it all depends on how old you are and how you were raised I'm my home we split everything evenly.

Is that archaic? Yes, but not necessarily all bad.

One of my sister's married a guy she fell in love with and the one who works practically every day is her, while he stays at home doing whatever he wants. She's even got some health issues (she's the bread and butter of her family) recently but like the saying goes: "You've made your bed, now lie in it" unless it gets too extreme then others (Family/Cops) will have to intervene but hasn't come to that point... So far.

The thing is....one day the tenets of today, that you live by, will be seen as old fashioned by your grandchildren.

I have to agree with you on that one, so true! I always think of this point when I have different views and opinions compared to older generations.
