Have You Improved Your Fitness As You Got Older?

In the News

Just read about an American woman who started powerlifting at the age of 59.

https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/04/powerlifting-grandma-says-she-feels-better-now-than-30-years-ago-14512834/?ito=article.tablet.share.top.link

She’s now 71 and fitter than ever. She feels better now than she did 30 years ago.

Has anyone else improved their fitness level as they have aged?

I think I have; I eat less junk, exercise more, also have not smoked since my late teens and don't drink that often.

The old bones still creek when I get up in the morning though.

Rarely ever read an article on Metro, and going from this lead me to this:

https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/08/liking-my-breasts-doesnt-make-me-any-less-non-binary-14507085/

An article where a chick talked about being proud of her chîck. 😆 I mean, good for her.

Anyway, that 70 year old woman is fit as hell. I've seen 70 and 80 men/women and would say they're more around 48-50 since they take good care of themselves.

I’ve certainly paid more attention to strength training as I’ve gotten older, whereas it was mainly cardio when I was younger. I intend to do more things like power lifting as I get older, as you’re prone to losing muscle mass as you age

I am definitely. When I got divorced I lost weight and started going to the gym. Now married again, I’m not quite as healthy but I am fitter than I was at 40.

Before my mid 30s I never worked out & had a terrible diet. Now I try to work out 3-5 days a week, some weeks I achieve it, some I don't. My diet is very good & healthy as I had been working on losing lockdown weight, iv achieved that now but have continued as I feel so much better when I eat correctly. I have phases where I fall out of it tho.

charlottegardie well done! You must feel amazing. Any tips to losing weight? Eating less and moving more sounds so simple but it’s a hard slog in real life.

I'm the same ...having said that tho...at the mo I'm suffering with what I think is a calf strain (Googled it) .....I think cos it's been so cold and I really strode out a couple of times trying to get somewhere fast and over a longer distance than normal.😭

I do try to improve my fitness but other things get in the way. While I was a cruise in March I went to the gym everyday but I had the time.

My aunt did this, she quit smoking in her 30s, lost weight and started doing triathlons. She's nearly 50 now still does triathlons regularly and looks great.

No I haven’t but know I should try to do more. It’s very difficult if you’re disabled to be motivated, well that’s what I tell myself.

Sadly not. Since the Covid lockdown I'm no longer having to go into work, so don't get to go the gym at work. I was able to go at my lunch break and do Spinning, Boxercise, Circuits etc classes. I still go out daily on my bike, but sadly its not the same fitness wise, as going to the gym. I've tried doing home workouts, but it's just not the same.

Yes since I’ve started surfskating I’m the fittest I’ve ever been at the age of 41. What’s even better is that it’s so much fun I don’t even feel like I’m exercising. It’s something that I really enjoy doing with my partner so we get to spend quality time together.

snoogans888 I've never heard of surfacing but it sounds fun and good that you both do it together.

Grannyclock it’s a relatively new thing but a lot of older people are getting into it who have always wanted to skateboard and this is an easier and safer way to do it.
