Is it just a new phone you want or a new contract? If you already have a contract then go into the phone store and speak to them about what you want from a phone, but if you are on a contract it might cost more as it will be considered an upgrade and it will depend on whether you qualify for an upgrade (if you are on a contract where you pay for the phone and service each month, you are only eligible for a free upgrade if you have paid off the phone you currently have). When it comes to phone contracts, the reason they are expensive is because you are paying for the phone each month and even after you have paid for the phone, you are still paying for it. If you buy a phone and then have a sim only contract it is much cheaper. If you already have a sim only contract then go into a shop and buy a new phone. Make sure you know what is most important to you in terms of what you are getting from the phone (eg storage space, being able to use apps, email, camera etc)

I too am on a tight budget and use a Nokia Lumia 520. It's a very basic phone but I am not fussed about all the latest apps and what not. I just use it to check the weather forecast, the alarm, calendar, calculator an emergency camera and of course phone calls. I am on pay as you go which I top up £5 around once a month.

My mother in law has a simple smart phone. It is a Samsung but can't remember the model. She doesn't tend to pay over £100 on a phone and only pays about £10 a month for her sim only contract. She only uses hers for phone calls, texts, fb and occasionally looking up things on the internet. I will see if I can find out what model she has.

I'd suggest getting a refurbished one from Music Magpie - prices start around £30. (When you get to the site do a Sort by Price Low to High) - here's a link (NB. The extra 20% off offer has closed though):
