Your Opinion Would Be Appreciated.

At the moment I am fuming so forgive me if you consider this a vent.

I employ a decorator and an apprentice for him who goes to college 2 days a week. This week I had no work for them so I told them to go to my home and re-stain my conservatory. The decorator was fine, they get paid, I provide their transport, workwear, tools and materials. I have just had a very abusive call from the apprentices mother that I am abusing my position and feathering my nest etc and she says she is going to report me. I am not bothered about that but surely decorating is decorating wherever it is? Or am I the one in the wrong?

ALL SORTED NOW - VENT OVER AND THANKS TO ALL FOR THEIR OPINIONS

They are students and learning to decorate, so does not matter where they practice. I think when u tell them to decorate your home you take a risk too. It could go completely wrong too.

His course won't care who owns the conservatory. They'll just need to see proof that he is doing his hours. She's probably upset if he can't get enough hours for his course or maybe he won't get paid enough this month for them to get by? I think you did him a favour personally, giving him some hours when otherwise he would have had none.

Thanks for you comments ... I have calmed down now. I have had 2 previous apprentices with no problems and still employ them now, this has left a bit of a sour taste.

Jamala don't take it personally, his mum's being very over protective 😂

I personally don’t see anything wrong with this? If you paid him fair then I don’t think youre abusing your position at all. Is she potentially upset that the apprentice spends more time with yourself than her? It’s really the only thing I can think of for the outburst 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hope you manage to get it sorted x

If you are concerned i would send an email to the college, explain your upset and ask their opinion

At least that way you'll know if there is a next time.

Do you know whether the rant is coming entirely from her or whether she's trying to speak on behalf of her son? Since he(?)'s the one you're employing not the mother then it's him who should be talking to you if there are any issues - you might find out he's absolutely fine about everything (I couldn't see why he wouldn't be, he's still getting the experience)

Thank you. As I already knew ... I have done nothing wrong. The only issue may have been if it was only him and I was at home but I would never have put myself or an employee in that position. Just letting it go now. Thanks for you opinion.
