Opinions Please on Hellofresh

Ask a Question

I’m tempted to sign up for a trial of Hellofresh. Are the portions big enough? Do you get much choice? Some recipes have an extra supplement charge?

Never used it but I've seen offers to try it on cashback sites and still haven't used it as it didn't seem that great value even with the big cashback but also more importantly the recipes didn't really appeal that much. It was the sort of meals I don't typically eat. My favourite food is British, Chinese and Indian and I'm not into European food so much. I do like Italian a fair bit but not much French food. When I say Italian I mean lasagne mostly even pizzas I prefer US/Canadian style pizzas which the Italians despise it seems. So I looked at the options and most of them I didn't want to eat anyway. Maybe 10% of meals appealed. I don't eat lamb, hate prawns, don't like too much garlic, dislike the flavour of wine etc. It was like almost every meal I didn't want.

BonzoBanana I think there’s lots of menu choice but just concerned that portion size wouldn’t be enough for my husband. We like pizzas too, I tend to buy these from the supermarket rather than make myself.

Sorry can’t help as I have never ordered from Hellofresh or any other ones like Simply cook, mindful chef or gousto. I have always had time to cook and like to experiment with different flavours. Not sure on price but believe they do introductory deals which may help you. i think it can be as much as 60% off your first order.

eyeballkerry thank you. I do have an offer. A friend used them for about 6 months when it first started then gave up because portions were small so I have my concerns.

Pjran I have no idea on size of portions but I have recently cut down the amount I eat due to be diagnosed as diabetic. I do find it amazing how much is served up when you go to a restaurant. It’s always too much for me. Maybe the portions from hellofresh are the recommended daily allowance.

Whilst I've never used this service, I've seen many videos on tiktok of people filming what has been delivered and the vegetables looked very ropey. Not fresh. I've only seen negative videos of the service. Might be an idea to do some research first and see what the majority have to say. Based on the videos I've watched, I wouldn't sign up.

CarolNettle Hello, thank you for responding to this chat topic. We have removed your comment I am sorry as this was in 2023 and Hello Fresh responded that it was a supplier and not them directly and they were not aware of what was happening and got rid of the supplier and any coconut milk sourced from Thailand straight away. We have to be very careful as a public platform about what we have on here I am sorry. You can find the news article related to this here >> https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/07/hellofresh-drops-thai-coconut-milk-after-peta-monkey-labour-campaign Thank you 🙂

I used them on a cheap trial. Choice (2-person meals) was good though I had to add extra meat for hubby, (he eats more than the average person). I changed to 4-person meals half way through trial and had enough veg for all week.

I never find these recipe boxes that good to be honest. I think they have improved since i last tried one, but i remember they just sent me some recipe cards and some sauce pots/spices. I had to buy my own protein and vegetables. I also didn’t find some of the recipes that good (one was a bacon omelette or something like that.)

I kind of felt that it was pointless, as i had to go and buy the protein so i might as well have just bought all of the ingredients and cooked it from scratch.

I gather HelloFresh is different in that they also provide the protein and the vegetables, so I can see the appeal of that, but it seems a bit expensive for what it is. For me personally, I’d just look up recipes online and buy all the stuff myself. Bound to be cheaper and to make a bigger portion size.

If you're not worried about the cost (as it's cheaper to buy the ingredients yourself) then I would go for it. The other thing to think about is where you are and whether delivery services are good near you as they can be delivered by Evri. You can view menus before committing on their website.

Swimmer94 taking into account the discount that’s being offered on the trial it’s not expensive. Maybe just use the offer then cancel if the meals work out expensive.

My son tried them for a while. He is disabled and found them really useful with a nice menu choice and found them easy to prepare when he wasn't feeling too well. He also mentioned that he had less food waste as he was only delivered enough for the meals he intended to eat.

AlysonC Thank you for your comment. If they’re easy to prepare that’s a bonus and worth considering.

Iv used hello fresh & gusto a number of of times in the past & I never had any issues with quality. I like the convenience & portion control. I found the meal portions were enough for me but like lily I have to add extra for OH as he does need the extra calories. I think we prefered gusto recipes but not by a great deal more.

My cousin trialled them, as she lives on her own & they pitched it to her as being something ideal for those who want limited meal prep but high variety & no wastage. Though it may have fulfilled some of the criteria she wants in her meals, she has exotic tastes & in the end she stopped using them & just found other ways to meal plan (we’re fortunate to live in an area with a lot of choice - and she likes her ‘too good to go’ options)

My friend has used it (not sure she still does) and always sung it's praises. I was never up for it because despite it's claim to be cheaper I know I can cook what I want, when I want for less. And it doesn't do away with shopping as you still have to buy all the other things you need in a home, toiletries, cleaning products etc.

I agree with you. I would still need to buy other meals etc, so would have to continue supermarket shopping.

You could always give it a trial run and see what it’s like the food items and try out their recipes and too sweet how big the food portions are. How days do they give you for a trial, a whole month? It’s always better to buy food ingredients yourself as you can see how fresh the products are and it’s obviously more cheaper in supermarkets
