Opinions on the Vincent Lambe Film about James Bulger - Detainment

Should it have been made? Is it a film that will answer questions? The Producer refuses to pull it from the Oscars because he believes it is a story that needs to be told. I have strong views on this but would encourage a balanced discussion.

I am torn on this one but in the end I have to say I feel it should not have been made. The family of James have never had any respite from this and it is time they should be able to live their lives without strangers jumping on a bandwagon of debate, book or film about their child. I am a firm believer that the evil in this world should not be advertised or brought to the fore over and over once the original story has been told. It just gives sickos ideas and things to gloat over. I know some will say that bad things need to be brought to public attention but I think it only serves as a template for other evil people and makes good people very depressed and scared for their own families. We should concentrate on good, spread word of good, make films that are uplifting rather than fill our hearts and minds with the evil that mankind does. I guess at the end of the day we have to ask ourselves, does watching a film about serial killers, torture, evil doing and hate really count as entertainment? I speak as one who has watched their fair share and has decided enough is enough.

I couldn't have put it better myself - we are most definitely on the same page. I remember the sad circumstances and how they changed a trait in me. There was a time when I would have turned a blind eye to incidents where I didn't feel strong enough to get involved in. This sad case made me realise that we need to question and challenge when something doesn't look right and I have slept easier for it. I suppose I would have been interested in views from a member who may have been pro this film as I honestly cannot find any understanding in the need to produce something so obscene and distasteful.

Given the amount of films that have been made in the past about real life violent perpetrators or events it's not a surprise that someone would also make a film about the killing of James Bulger. This incident sent shockwaves around the UK and still engenders a great deal of anger. It's naive to believe violence in society would reduce if films showing violence or recounting a violent act were not made. I would rather see someone try to give honest account than a Agatha Christie or Marvel style book/film that trivialises violence and murder.

I believe that if kids watch violence and other unsavoury content in films etc their brains are susceptible to normalising that behaviour. I remember as a child not being able to differentiate acting on screen from normal life and even today we read of grown adults bopping an actor on the nose for acting in a bad way on screen.....how screwed up is that, to not realise he/she is only acting a part?
From what I remember of this case, the two boys had been through the care system and their parents were not the best, often leaving them indoors watching horror films and others with 18 certificates. Some of the things they did were replicating actions from the Chucky film.
I know of one parent who punished his child by forcing him to watch horror films alone in a dark room, is it any wonder that child is now a real challenge to his foster carer?
If children are taught to be nice and good early on by loving parents then I DO believe there would be less violence in society but what hope is there with parents who are neglectful, addicts or abusive?
There is an old saying 'you don't have to teach a child to be naughty, but you do have to teach a child to be good'. Too many parents just don't bother.

Lynibis The reasons why people commit violence are numerous and complex. Violence has existed throughout human history and it's going to continue. There is no evidence Jon Venables even watched Child's Play 3. His father had rented the film a number of months before the attack, but the police believe Jon didn't see it as he wasn't living with his father at that time. Psychiatric reports state Jon didn't even like horror films and the police could not find a connection between the film and the attack. It was merely a cynical fabricated story created by the tabloids to help whip up a storm to sell more newspapers. If you ban violent films violence in society is not going to diminish.

ACR I agree. I believe that some people are just born evil. And many children have bad home lives and/or watch horror films but don't go on to do the things those 2 evil boys did. Everyone has a conscience. They knew exactly what they were doing.
