Paypal Inactivity Fee

In the News

https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/14/martin-lewis-issues-warning-about-paypal-charging-inactive-account-holders-13423255/

just a heads up to anyone who hasn’t used their Paypal accounts for a while - beware the inactivity fee they plan to start charging soon

just login to your account to stay active (or if it’s zero balance, you won’t be affected)

You’re welcome. It’s a shame they’re doing this, but it costs them admin to keep accounts live, so it’s just a way they are forcing people to confirm if they still want their accounts

I did this yesterday but once you read up it’s not as bad as it sounds. You will get warnings, but I use my Paypal more than my bank now.

I think it also coincides with regulatory updates, as they want people to confirm their phone numbers to get verification codes sent to make the accounts secure

I don't get the £12 fee, for what exactly? I could understand them closing down your account but to charge a fee that you never agreed to and was never in your terms and conditions seems criminal to me and outright theft. When the fee is added and you still don't go into your paypal account do they start adding compound interest so in 3 or 4 years it could hundreds of pounds with late payment penalties and interest on top?

I use paypal but a vile company I wish I didn't use but its not like I can just ignore paypal if I want to use ebay.

It says if the inactive account’s balance is less than £12, it‘ll swallow that up to take it to nil balance - and if it’s at nil balance, it won’t take anything (nor can it as). It’s just a way they can squeeze money out of dead accounts

hspexy So lets say you had £300 in your account that you had forgot about for some reason would it regularly dip into that, perhaps every year to take another £12? Again though if you never agreed to those terms and you haven't been into your account to agree any new terms what is the legality of it? Just emailing them doesn't seem legal especially if that email address is not active anymore.

It sounds worse than it is - and they do give warnings too so it should be very easy to avoid paying.
