Pen Pals - Did You Have One?

Ask a Question

Did you ever have a pen pal, if your old enough your know what am talking about. I had a few, two French ones and English ones I had met on holiday abroad. Sadly not in touch with any of them anymore. I recently got acquainted to a Portuguese lad on holiday but itโ€™s all social media now to keep in touch. How I miss them letters coming in the post.

I had a few pen pals who I made friends with as a little girl whilst on holiday in France. I also miss those times, it gradually phased out!

In my 30s and 40s before email, I had a Russian pen pal through a pen pal club. Her husband was an engineer and never knew from one month to the next whether he would get paid. If I remember correctly she may have been a teacher. Life was a permanent struggle for her family but she retained a strong faith.

The shortages they faced were things we take for granted like paracetamol, biros, tights, treats, etc. Every so often I would fill a shoe box with such things and send them to her. The letters I got in response you would think I had sent her a gold ingot. She had a young daughter and Christmas was coming so I sent her a Barbie doll with masses of different outfits and accessories and told her to wrap it up as if from her and her husband. She told me she would never forget the look on her child's face when she opened it. Such a little thing to do but meant so much to them.

How lovely. What a kind and thoughtful thing to do. Itโ€™s the small things in life that make people smile.

I had a pen pal for several months we both live in different countries. We became best friends through text after time we decided to meet in person. We fell in love and now getting married. Having a pen pal was the best thing to ever happen to me!

I used to have penpals or contacts where we would swop pirate software. I'd send a few amiga games and get a few back many years ago and we would also include a letter to each other about which amiga games we liked and other stuff that was going on in the scene. It was always great to receive a package. We also used to put sellotape over the stamps so we could re-use the stamps by cleaning off the ink from the sellotape so the stamps below looked new. I was a bit of a minor criminal in my youth.

I had a russian contact before that in the days of the Sinclair Spectrum but he was always going on about how much he hated jews all the time in his letters which was a bit distracting even in my youth. For the life of me I can't remember how we initially made contact although I did have a VTX5000 modem for my Spectrum so used to go onto bulletin boards (remember those, what we had before the internet) so maybe it was there. I think I later discovered the penpal was disabled in someway as there were some clues in his letters. Such a long time ago and perhaps I am confusing him with someone else.

I had two, the first, when I was about 11 - 13 lived in Cape Town but originally from Suffolk, they moved from SA and not another word. The second when I was 14 was an Italian boy who used to send me weather information as a comparison with ours for my Geography project. He decided to stop writing when I was getting married at 24 because "it would not be appropriate to write to a married woman" ๐Ÿ˜ž
